Facebook to apparently discontinue free business advertising

Stating in mid-January, business Facebook pages will have to pay on a per post basis
not quite sure how i feel about this. on one hand, i think that the system was set up to be a free community, and good job by businesses to capitalize on that system. on the other hand, i understand that Facebook is now public, has shareholders to answer to, and wants some money for providing the communications avenue for these businesses to succeed.

Could this please extend to all the freaking stay at home mom "business women" selling rodan and fields and advocare??
Seriously I've had to unfollow a few friends cause every post they make is selling that crap.

For small business that hinges on social media and especially start up businesses, this sucks.

That's the worst. If I'm looking for a restaurant to eat at, I can never find their menu or hours on the Facebook page.

Facebook will slowly die off and go the way of the myspace. It simply asks for too many facets of your life. We are not the exact same people around coworkers, family, friends, or strangers (well most of us at least).
Other social media outlets let people tailor both their sharing and experience to a certain domain of their life. People generally don't have one monolithic identity and that will ultimately be the demise of Facebook.
The founder of 4chan has a good speech about identity on the internet that speaks to this idea.

i was listening to Kim Komando when I heard this news. She is on different radio shows providing tech updates. According to Komado, she has approximately 200,000 followers. Each Facebook post, under the new pay system, would cost her approximately $2,000.

The problem is by paying to "boost" post, you are buying clicks and likes from click factories in Laos, India, etc.
As opposed to the old fashioned free organic growth that started by you creating the page and getting local friends to like it, which in turn showed up on other local peoples feeds.
20K likes from India doesn't help a small town bakery in Bumfrick, LA.
That's my main beef with it...

Screw small businesses if they can't make a website to advertise their business.
Why should Facebook promote their business for free?
For $15 a year they can register a domain name and use something free like Weebly to create a website for their business.
And regardless of how simple it looks, it will look at lot more professional than a damn Facebook page as their business "website".

I have to look into this.
I created a simple Weebly website for my driver in India and a Facebook page for him. Also listed him officially on Tripadvisor. I only discovered him before due to random endorsements on forums.
I pay for the website hosting and such as a form of charity, but no way can I pay for a bunch of Facebook posts a year. Bummer.

I hate when it is their sole website, but I love business Facebook pages.
It is how I keep up with specials, goings on at the place, look at photos, etc.

I have a Facebook page, I have put a good bit into advertising on it, but the ROI is horrible compared to Google and Yelp advertising. I rarely even post on there anymore.
I'll just drop my FB ad and put more into Google+ (which gets you a better organic SEO anyway)

I don't think Fleurty Girl would have taken off without Facebook.
