I was trying to get this heavy duty epoxy off of some concrete a few years ago, so I got some muriatic acid from my uncle's buddy. He's one of those guys that has shite that you're not supposed to have, so he just handed me some brown jugs with liquid. Did not know it was like 50% or whatever, and I needed to dilute it, so I just poured it into a pump sprayer and started spraying it on the concrete.

After about a minute, I noticed liquid dripping on my boots. Turns out, the fricking acid was eating through the damn nozzle and hose on the pump sprayer, so I put it on the ground. It all poured out and made the concrete smoke yellow. I tried to spread the leftovers around with a broom. Didn't work too well because I had to keep dancing around the yellow smoke emanating from the concrete. It was pretty funny seeing all of the concrete yellow, but not so funny about everything dissolving and all of the smoke.

After all of that, my eyes burned like hell for a few days, and I was constantly coughing for 2-3 weeks after that. Plus, I still had to do the concrete.

I have a buddy who was a safety guy at DOW, and I asked him wtf I did wrong. Instead of laughing at me (like I would), he got angry and chewed me out.

I'll read the label next time

It's been running hot for a few weeks. In process of starting up the furnace.

I've heard of guys keeping a couple packs of hot Diet Coke in the control room just for that reason

Thought you were required to have an escape respirator on every person?

LAO (Dow Plaquemine for non-Dow folks) requires everyone to carry a mouth bit respirator with a chlorine cartridge. If there was a total outage of power due to a trip, the flaring is by design. Of course a fire and chlorine leak are not.

We had a very similar incident happen at a plant in a very, very small town called Graniteville in SC about 10 years ago. The town is in Aiken County and I lived about 10 miles from there when this happened.

A train that was delivering chlorine to the plant crashed around 3am and all of the chlorine gas leaked. The way the plant was situated in the town was such that 70% of the town's population lived within a quarter mile from the plant and the train tracks.

Because the accident happened so late at night and there was just a skeleton crew working, there was basically no warning or evacuation of the plant or the residents. That town is pretty much a ghost town now. Most of the residents died in their sleep from the chlorine gas exposure as did all of the plant crew working that night. A lot of those that survived within that quarter mile have since died from complications related to exposure and most of those that are still alive are still dealing with the effects from exposure.

The cause of the leak turned out to be the train operator's fault. He fell asleep and failed to stop the train at the end of the line of the tracks.

Horrible tragedy. A lot of ppl do not realize just how toxic and dangerous chlorine gas is. I didn't until the accident in Graniteville happened.

I hope that all involved in the incident there are safe and sound.

Muratic acid is no joke.

I used it to remove gold from 300 old laptops. Yielded an ounce but I read up a lot on it and wore gas mask while fricking with it.

That's the sheriff, I'm not sure how accurate his information is. He sounds like he's driving or otherwise distracted. Pressing buttons on his phone and shite.

I lost faith in Iberville leadership during the flood when it took them so long to do or confirm information with anything about Alligator Bayou. But that's a thread for another day.

Blast resistant does not mean inhalation resistant

That's just because leadership forgot they have an east bank of the parish.

All employees aren't issued respirators? Wtf?

Respirators are located throughout a plant and control rooms but not for every person...Definitely not for contractors on site either

Damn man I'd say you were playing with fire but that would be an understatement. Had a crew use some on a job last week and I made them wear respirators and acid resistant suits using. a 10:1 dilution.

HCl is scary shite.

Was just with my friend in environmental with LAO and they still don't know what caused this.

I work at a plant in Lake Charles that's next to a chlorine plant and EVERYONE has to have an escape respirator within arms reach at all times. If you come through the gate, you are given one. They stress it big time. There are a couple of guys that have been here for 30+ years and said they can only remember having to use them once.

Been that way for a good while, you are supposed to carry it wherever you go on the site. I have one in my office for when I go there for meetings or to do audits.

Yeah you're required to have one but how many times is it "sitting in the truck/trailer"?

I'm an a-hole about this when I go out on site and will continue to be one because of situations like this.
