I remember in every safety video/briefing at every plant was this:

During an emergency, you should stop driving (if you are), check the wind socks and walk to the nearest safety point.

Walk?

That's hard to believe because in those days it progressively got worse over time. They must have gone completely off the deep end at some point and head to reel it back. LOL!

They push safety so much, you become numb to it all, and you are more susceptible to a safety incident.

Well you could not run that would be unsafe, you might fall and hurt yourself.

Two options:

1. Walk. Probably die.
2. Run. You may fall and hurt yourself, but not die.

Let me think on that for a minute.

After five years of force-fed safety, it took me another five years after I left to get back to normal. I remember at at my next job being scared to stand on a chair to reach for something on a high shelf. Kind of like Morgan Freeman in shawshank, asking his boss at the grocery store for permission to go pee.

That probably wasn't chlorine that you were smelling. It probably was a swimming pool. Trust me, you don't just smell chlorine gas. It takes your breath away.

There are no pools for at least 4 miles in any direction. Thanks though

It was raining my covered area is 75x40 and drains onto the limestone.

Undoubtedly, it was coming off of there.

Anyone hear of what may have caused the incident?

a farmer burning a cane field under a transmission line knocked out power to parts of the plant. It caused a very small leak.

I have seen this happen in the past where smoke from a cane field carried enough carbon for the air to be ionized between phases of 230Kv.

"I'm sorry. Gonna have to tie off before I can grab that ream of paper up there."

Blank stare.

I'm pretty sure Dow Plaquemine has its own power plant.

ETA- Looking now, i don't believe they don't. I thought they had a coal fired power plant on site. Maybe i'm thinking of another facility.

Three of them, I think, but they are still tied to the grid and power flows both ways.

I think the root cause here was a problem with Entergy, because I heard Shintech also went down, but we didn't hear anything about it because they didn't have any leaks as a result.

It's likely that they have a voluntary respirator usage program or have an area to grab respirators nearby in the event of an accident, but nobody requires an escape respirator, per person, into a plant.

Very wrong. Axiall has two chlorine units and requires it to be worn at all times. Only they supply them and if you go in and exchange a used one for a new one you better have reported it.
