Almost any large dog breed can be raised and trained to be vicious like that.
My vet told us about a golden retriever he had to put down that attacked a couple neighborhood kids really viciously. And that's like the sweetest breed there is.
ETA:
This is not a reference to pit bulls, but to Rotties and Germans that have bad reps that aren't warranted. They just seem to be favorites of trashy folks that train them to be mean as frick. Pits definitely have that ever present ability to just snap on anyone though.

It's terrifying how big and strong some dogs are. My neighbors are completely fine people, but they can barely control their 120 pound plus German Shepard.
