I had driven from Colorado Springs and was nearing Castle Rock when the first news of it hit KOA radio and as I worked for Motorola we were all diverted to Jeffco Government where we listened to it unfold real time on law enforcement radio. I was not right for weeks, as the entire community was shell- shocked. Everybody made the trip over in ensuing weeks to the HS and the impromptu memorial that was set up. I was not right after that for weeks. It's hard to believe the impact that had on the American psyche- that two pampered suburban kids could unleash nihilistic homocidal sadism on their classmates with such an organized plan. Sad times. Man, time flies...

I had to present a pro-gun/ anti gun control argument that night for Speech class. It was awkward.

Columbine was intended not primarily as a shooting at all, but as a bombing on a massive scale. If they hadn't been so bad at wiring the timers, the propane bombs they set in the cafeteria would have wiped out 600 people. After those bombs went off, they planned to gun down fleeing survivors. An explosive third act would follow, when their cars, packed with still more bombs, would rip through still more crowds, presumably of survivors, rescue workers, and reporters. The climax would be captured on live television.

I take seven kids from Columbine
stand ‘em all in line
Add an AK-47, a revolver, a nine, A MAC-11 and it oughta solve the problem of mine
And that’s a whole school of bullies shot up all at one time

I was a Schriever AFB in Colorado Springs. A couple of our guys had kids at Columbine. Definitely a terrifying day.

I'm not saying it was the sole reason for the shootings but that event is one of the reasons why my child will NEVER be on some sort of "disorder" medication.
