A lot of companies make you wait a year before earning vacation, and even after that it could be as little as 40 hours. Should people be entitled to vacation prior to that? Should they be allowed to take unpaid leave so long as their work can be made up/their shift can be covered?

I'm in the party that says if things can go as smoothly without you as they do with you, who gives a frick? I'm not talking taking advantage of it, I just mean live your life and take some time off and get away when you need it.

I know there are employers that post here, thoughts? I'm interested to see how many assholes are here, which I guess I already should know is a lot.

EDIT: This thread went sort of a different direction than intended. For those who saw my story in the thread (the reason for starting the thread), it should be noted that I work in a plant on shift work. Things can go as smoothly as possible without me because the guys on my shift are all trained the same and we all do the same job. We just need multiple people, because, well it's shift work. So the idea that I'm expendable is invalid.

I don't expect to get PAID vacation. I guess I worded the first title wrong. I would rather be entitled to a decent amount of unpaid leave so long as my shifts can be covered and without obviously taking off an excessive amount of time.

I don't get PAID leave until I've been with the company for 1 year and after that it's only 40 hours which basically equates to 3 days of paid leave per year. (12 hr shift x 3 = 36 hours, the remaining 4 irrelevant essentially).

And this vacation accrual is fairly typical among other plants I would imagine.

I just wanted to bitch and moan about my boss not seeing the bigger picture and trying to let his nuts hang, carry on guys.

I wouldn't take a job where I didn't get at least 3 weeks starting on day one

I asked my boss of one of my first jobs about unpaid leave. He said that if there was ever a day where they managed without me to not even bother coming back.

I've never asked about or taken unpaid leave since.

Why doesn't the employer just pay you a years salary in your first day also?

Vacation time is earned, just like salary, bonuses, commission, etc.

Americans* do not use, nor get, enough vacation time.

*government and teachers excluded from this conversation.

I don't know about "entitled" because that implies that it should be something employers should be forced to do..

But I think it is silly. I've only worked for 1 company that had the whole "wait an entire year before you get any time" deal. Everywhere else has been an accrued model.

Luckily, I don't deal with any of that shite anymore. The amount of time your "butt is in chair" =/= your quality of work.

I guess I should mention that I don't necessarily mean earn PAID vacation. I just mean in general human decency, like just saying hey man take some time off, I won't pay you but it's fine. We work too much man. Need to focus on the finer things

At worst I feel a company should let you start accumulating after at least 30 days.

Unless I had been unemployed for months and was desperate, I wouldn't take a job that didn't offer vacation for the first year.

If you're strict with vacation, you're going to lose out on talent to other companies that aren't.

That's asinine. If you work for a company that can't live without you for a day, then it's a terribly run business.

If I have some one put in for vacation while I am interviewing them they probably won't be getting the job. You have to put your time in first.

Or maybe he was trying to teach me that not all jobs are important enough to take unpaid leave from???

Paid or unpaid?

I've been hired for jobs with vacations already planned. Hell, they "waived" it as a "sign-on bonus" freebie kind of thing and I didn't even have to use actual vacation time.

If someone is the ideal candidate for the job, choosing not to hire them because they have a vacation planned is stupid as hell. Sounds like something an out-of-touch old school white haired company president halfway on his death bed would do.

I've been in an interview where I was offered the position. I let them know that I had a family vacation planned a month after my start date. They said it was no big deal. If a company told me "sorry, we're not going to hire you because of your planned vacation", then it's not a place I want to work anyway.

Really depends on two things. Paid or unpaid and if this is a high turnover job. If it's a position that stays filled by a professional it's cool. If were talking about a position where somebody may quit after 3 month then hell no.

.. so what you're saying is that you're a restaurant manager.. ?

In that case, your original post makes sense.

Remember vacation is a perk. It's not mandatory.
