East Baton Rouge Sheriffs Office sent me a bill for $25

Because they responded to my alarm going off and there wasnt a break in.
Here's the story: I get a call from my home monitoring service a few weeks ago saying that my alarm was triggered. They ask me if I want to send the police to my home to investigate. I leave work to go home and check it out. It turns out that my wife didnt close the back door all the way before she set the alarm. The wind blew the door open and it went off.
Two questions: Why am I paying taxes, shouldnt this be covered under the taxes I already pay? Its not like they are busy. And wouldnt this make the average person less likely to send the police to their home if their alarm is triggered and they are unsure of the problem?

Probably the first time you've been aware of it happening.
They usually don't bill you until the third call out.
You'd better straighten that woman out
Your only 5 months out from June, with 7 months left.
It's going to get expensive very quickly.

So you're assuming they weren't busy, and they were sitting at Mary Lees eating donuts?

DO YOU REALLY WANT TO PISS THEM OFF?! JUST PAY THE FINE! YOU DON'T WANT TO PLAY GAMES. TRUST ME...

Just tell them that there was a break-in, but the culprit escaped before they could get there.

It's called a user fee and it's pretty common.
Same reason you get charged for using an ambulance.

If they were doing something really important I don't think they would come check out a home alarm going off.

Running a red light with the flashing camera fine is more $$$.
Neither one makes any sense though.

I can understand them charging for excessive 'false alarms', however I always thought it was after a certain number & not the very 1st one?
How many times have they responded to your alarm?
I wouldn't mind paying the $25 for anyone to check on my home especially if it was my mistake.

Why should the sheriff's have to waste their time bc your wife didnt properly secure your house which triggered a false alarm? Who's at fault here?

You are supposed to register the alarm system in EBR with the Sheriff's office when it is put into service.
For that fee you typically get a few false alarm trips included at no charge. I think they start charging after a few.
Was your system registered?

They obviously have 3 other alarm call outs at your address in their CAD log this year or you aren't within code. If there is a mistake challenge it as they will have documentation.
Do you realize how many alarm calls the police get a day? Go look up the stats for calls for service in relation to alarms. It takes deputies/officers put of priority areas, delays there response time to other calls because they are traveling to or from your place, and they have to respond if the alarm company calls.

Are you sure? If so, I'd call them and ask them what previous three times since June 1 did they respond to a false alarm at your address. See below.

The same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago. It's a false alarm fee, except mine was $20. There's a law that all alarms (business and residential) have to be registered in the city you're in so that means you weren't registered.
I was fine paying it. The police arrived within 5 minutes of me accidentally setting it off and forgetting what our passcode was. I'm chalking it up to a test run. The fee covers the next 10 false alarms. Stop complaining and pay the tiny fee for your peace of mind.

It was probably a notification to pay for your alarm permit. It's 25 dollars in BR and the EBRSO will send you a letter asking for the registration payment after their first trip out there (ie when they realize you have an alarm).
The letter is poorly worded and confusing and may lead one to think this is their 4th alarm call.

If it were me, I would pay it. If you dont pay it then they likely kill your dog.
