I'd get the Chinese stuff. It's regarded as the best bang for your buck.

1/2" drywall is used in most residential settings.

But if you have brick seperator you probably don't need anything

Also there should already be drywall on the wall to compare?

I'd guess 2 layers 1/2" or 2 layers 5/8" depending on the fire rating required by code

If there is still drywall on the ceiling you should be able to figure out how many layers and thickness

Although I'm not certain thus the reason I ask but I've been told 5/8" fire rated on each side of the wall.

Can anyone verify?

Why not get your contractor neighbor to find out for you?

Like I told you on the OB, you need to speak with an inspector for the area. That is what they are there for and your taxes/fees pay his salary. Even if someone comes on here claiming to be an inspector you still don't know for sure he isn't just someone yanking your chain.

And the OB has already mentioned that your townhouse common wall may need 5/8 on both sides one sheet thick or maybe two sheets.

Why are you making this hard on yourself?

He doesn't trust your opinion. Obviously, what you said is right. Maybe he is a glutton for punishment.

Sheet rock...just how long has this junk been around/used ? You can easily damage it, it's a pain to install, it weighs a ton, and on and on and on...HOW, has there not been a better alternative developed by now ???

to meet code for a common wall, you need to use 5/8" for fire proofing and you are only obligated to make sure "your side" of the wall meets code. LINK

you are also required by code to have this type of insulation in the wall (on your side only) but if you want a quiet house, it is highly recommended that you spend the money to do a double layer of sound deadening insulation, one layer on your wall and one layer on the neighbors wall, with an air space between them to prevent sound transfer, you wont even know you have someone living on the other side of that wall.
