Just found out that my daughters school friend was killed last night due to a drunk driver. I remember this sweet little girl this just crushes my heart. They sat together at lunch.

That little girl didn’t deserve to die.

They are. And I post in these threads that penalties for drinking and driving need to be 100x harsher than they are currently, and usually get downvoted to death.

I have been almost killed twice by drunk/distracted drivers, and I have no sympathy. Was behind a guy this morning who ran upon a median curb because he was fiddling with his phone or something.

First offense - 1 year in jail. Lose license for 2 years.

Then get tougher from there.

We need to add harsher penalties for drunk driving, and we need to make texting while driving have the same penalties as drunk driving.

Do we get to put teens in jail for a year if they are texting and driving?

No victims of drunk drivers deserve it, but when this entire state treats dwi as a laughable "aw shucks" occurrence with light penalties instead of a sign that there's a potential for harm or death in the future - this is what happens. Our state police and politicians see DWI as a source of revenue, not potential for harm. I'm still waiting for the family of a victim killed by multi-dwi offender to sue the city, parish, and state for being so soft on these laws. First DWI should be MANDATORY year jail time with five years suspended license after release with a massive fine to work off as well. I've even thrown the idea out to have a state run prison specifically for DWI offenders where they have to attend mandatory substance abuse counseling every single day during their time - really drill it in their brains what a threat to society they have become and give them the chance to change their lives upon exit.

Except for the fact that the judgment of an impaired person is, by definition, impaired.

We probably have the technology by now to jam cell signal in vehicles. Only issue would be navigation apps trying to find a location, but that can be done before putting the car in park.

I was speaking more in the context of drunk driving, but I'm sure the penalties for simply distracted driving could be much stiffer than they are now to deter the behavior.

You would be suprised, but Uber and Lyft are not readily available in some mid size cities. Especially with gas prices soaring, lots of drivers are getting out of the business.

Same with the morons who blow through intersections while staring at their smart phone.

Might as well just keep them in jail for 5 years.

2nd offense should be a lifetime ban from having a license.

A third offense should be life in PMITA prison.

It's a premeditated crime.

The decision is made when someone doesn't designate a driver.
