Yes they are, had an Aunt killed by one who had many priors, first offense take their damn license for a sizable amount of time, if they drive without one, lock them up

I’m assuming you’re talking about the accident off of 34 in WM. One of them was the daughter of my wife’s friend/former co-worker. She was a beautiful girl and was taken way too early by a piece of trash. Three of them died in that wreck, including another young girl and her grandpa. The drunk driver fled the scene and was arrested later.

There's a podcast called 911 Calls with the Operator. They recently released a special episode that had the host talking to/interviewing his niece who was 17/18 at the time she was driving her sister and friend and was hit by a drunk driver doing 98 to 105mph through intersections.

The episode is the story of before, during, and after the wreck. One of the passengers died as did the drunk driver, her sister survived but faced an incredible recovery. This episode is a very good one to listen to if you've been impacted by the poor and reckless decisions of a drunk driver. Take the time to listen to it, you won't regret it.

There's a bonus in that his niece is a great singer/songwriter who released her first album recently.

Here's the song she wrote for her friend who died in the wreck:

No victims of drunk drivers deserve it, but when this entire state treats dwi as a laughable "aw shucks" occurrence with light penalties instead of a sign that there's a potential for harm or death in the future - this is what happens. Our state police and politicians see DWI as a source of revenue, not potential for harm. I'm still waiting for the family of a victim killed by multi-dwi offender to sue the city, parish, and state for being so soft on these laws. First DWI should be MANDATORY year jail time with five years suspended license after release with a massive fine to work off as well. I've even thrown the idea out to have a state run prison specifically for DWI offenders where they have to attend mandatory substance abuse counseling every single day during their time - really drill it in their brains what a threat to society they have become and give them the chance to change their lives upon exit.

You want to put someone in jail for a year that didn’t even hurt anyone - because they COULD have hurt someone?

I’m personally in favor of punishing people people for what they do, not what they might do.

I agree. And I am fully aware of the inconsistency in my "If I Were King" plan. I still do not plan to change my 6 months in prison for not returning a shopping cart to the corral law on the first offense. It is what it is.

Like that guy who killed 3 Nicholls nursing students. Say even one of those nurses would have went on to save someone's life, he killed them too.

Agree with harsher penalties. But what I dont agree with or think we need to fix are parking lots say at mixed use places that ban overnight parking. See that alot in North Texas. So if you drive to a bar and drink too much, the smart play is Uber/Lyft but now they are towing your car, have to stop that disincentive.

A lot of people on this site drink and drive. I agree with you, there should be harsh penalties for driving drunk. It’s a selfish, dangerous act that a lot of people do fairly often.

Drunk drivers who kill people should be executed.

You might want to rethink your statement . The person isn’t thinking they are going to get in the car to see who they can kill before they get home. Unlike a drive by shooting or a carjacker . The penalty for causing a death due to you being intoxicated is pretty severe. They are guilty on not using good judgement at the time only. I bet the majority of the people who are screaming the loudest have or will drive drunk at least once in their life and will play the odds they make it home with no issues.

It amazes me how light the penalties are. 1st, I get it. Every young person makes a mistake. It’s when I hear about someone getting their 4th DUI and killing someone that gives me the red arse. ESP if they never did jail time.

Admire the younger generation for using Uber, etc.

It's called a deterrent. If you have someone killed or injured by a careless driver, you will understand and agree.

When the penalty for drunk driving is much worse than the aggravation of getting a designated driver, Uber, or taxi, the numbers will plummet. The hard leg alcoholics (multiple offenders) will still violate, and they just need to be in jail.

Same for operating a boat while drinking, it kills s lot of people, and for some reason people are far to tolerant of it.
