Yeah but it wouldn't be anymore than 2 consecutive days at a time.

I was just looking for advice. We are doing to trip to the midsection of the country; however, I was just having a probably pipe dream of adding a west coast component to the trip.

Drove from WA State to San Antonio with a 1 year old, in addition to a 8 and a 6 year old. My thing was to only drive for 8/9 hours per day. However, the stretch from Mt Home, ID to Cheyenne, WY was a tad longer, and the 1 year old let us all have it for about 30 minutes before she passed out We were about 30 miles from Cheyenne, and she just went bonkers.

This site has no shortage of dumb arse posters, but not on the level you're inquiring about.

Consecutive days like that are rough on two adults, much less children. It is doable, because like I've always told my wife, they can't cry the entire time, right?

Yeah, I get the feeling this is one of those "new parent being naive" moments and that I have no idea what I'd be in for.

30 minutes nonstop crying seems like an eternity. Biggest thing is to make frequent stops, (hard as it might be) and take the kid out the seat for a while. I drive from San Antonio to Lake Charles often, and I hate stopping, but even older kids need to stretch a little.

Down the East Coast, it sucks, which you already know. Nothing more to tell you other than plan to be behind and stopped consistently. Not fair to the lil one or you guys truthfully, but if you're set on going.

Yeah it is such a catch-22 though. If they're awake, we'll do that, but if they're sleeping, we will drive until the gas light comes on. Putting a kid back into a car seat after they've stretched out for 15-20 minutes just restarts the clock on the 30 minutes of crying.

In summary, I wouldn't drive longer than 8-9 hours in any day unless you absolutely had to do so, and I wouldn't add any west coast leg to your trip because the consecutive days will be tough for all.

Strap them kids in and give them a little bit of vodka and a Cherry Coke.

Two days of driving for adults will turn into longer with kids. You really need to take more frequent breaks and let them run around a bit, so 5-minute rest area stop turns into 20 minutes or more. Also, plan a little fun time when you stop for the night--30 minutes of pool time or something. This means you probably won't be able to drive as long in one day.

Just warning you that what you plan (no more than 2 days in the car) won't always happen and you may need to adjust your schedule.

Yep done it a few times, starting as early as 6 weeks from Virginia to Louisiana. It was easy early since they sleep so much. As older just need plenty of snacks and movies help hold their attention if you have built in or portable dvd screen

Just have to stop every few hours to change diaper and feed and get them out of car seat. But we've had good kids for traveling, no excessive fussing

Attempting BR to Dinsey this summer. I will leave at 3am and then stop for breakfast when they wake up so they can get out and stretch. Then I will have movies going until lunch and then stop for an hour or so for lunch. After lunch hopefully they will be napping for another few hours.

I am also going to pick something like this up for movies. LINK

best advice in this thread is to plan on driving at night, while the baby normally sleeps. Also a DVD player or tablet is a good idea. Mine did not travel well until she was about 2 1/2. we'd get about an hour down the road and she would melt hard.
