Drive across BR driverless cars would be smarter than some of the drivers out there

Driverless cars are coming but manually operated vehicles will always have a place at least in our lifetimes.

I think the change is going to be much more abrupt than everyone thinks because of what someone mentioned earlier: the insurance companies. Driverless cars are pretty quickly going to prove to be so much safer than human driven cars that getting insurance to drive yourself is going to start becoming prohibitively expensive for most people. Most people will quit buying manually driven cars and the car manufacturers will quit making them. They'll just go away or be relegated to a very small number of models geared toward rich gearheads that can afford to insure themselves.

Think of how rare it is already to find a manual transmission in a car these days. Now imagine the insurance company charged you five times as much to drive stick over automatic. You think you'd ever find one on a regular lot at that point?

insurance

No one really has any idea what will happen with this. It's all speculation. I could just as easily make the argument that insurance costs will remain relatively unchanged for manually driven vehicles whereas driverless cars will not require insurance at all.

Plus I can't possibly imagine a driverless car being capable of meeting the needs of the average driver any time soon. Maybe for the guy who just drives to and from work and that's it.

Is my driverless car going to really going to be able to tow my boat and back it down the boat launch in < 10 years? Is it going to tow my trailer out to LSU campus on a Friday before game day in the Fall? I don't think so.

They can. But more often than not it will buzz the human driver to take the wheel when approaching a situation like that.

I love when people state facts about an article without even reading the first sentence of the article!

I cant wait till we have big 1800's style horse coaches again that are self driving with lazy boy chairs and big screen tv's that are electric and charge wirelessly on their own so I can pick up on a sunday morning turn on some NFL while my coach drives me from houston to wherever

one can dream

t seriously amazes me that this is a thing. I don't get how they can go through things like construction zones or cops directing traffic and know what to do

Technology solves problems. At one time, not long ago, someone said "no way a car can shift itself"..... people can make the gear decision... no way a car knows when to shift.... there's hill, that traffic.... breaking.... etc. it takes a person to know how to shift and operate a car....... now in 2017, standard transmissions don't really exist any more.

They seriously couldn't come at a better time. I spend a good bit of my job driving and the amount of people on their phones is mind blowing. The other day I was at Perkins and Essen and couldn't find a single person sitting In traffic around me not staring at their phone. It was a pretty rare moment

It was probably rare to you because at lights you are always looking at your phone and never notice! Look around more and you will see more people than not will be looking at their phone, basically anyone under 40 without kids will be doing it for sure.

I can't wait. I trust a computer way more than I trust most dumbass drivers.

If you had been following reporting on self driving tech up to this point you'd know they aren't anywhere near close to being ready to actually be out on the road. The current tech simply cannot function unless the conditions are absolutely perfect and even then the driver is supposed to always be ready to take over. Unfortunately people are fricktards and won't be paying attention, won't use their tech properly, and won't be any less dangerous on the road.

Of course we have a President who views safety regulations as if they are the worst thing ever in Trump so I'm sure Elon Musk will dole out enough blow jobs to get them out on the road well before they should be.

This thread is exactly why the innovation curve will be an S curve adoption. Plenty of people that want to see someone else risk their life before they remotely consider it.

Once the capability proves itself, this will shoot off like a rocket.

I didn't click the link, but there are driverless cars all over the roads in Louisiana already.

They appear to be abandoned an left on the side of the road.

Happens all the time...after a couple days the state puts a big orange sticker on the back window then it gets hauled off.

This technology is immature and no manufacturer can currently make a totally autonomous vehicle that will function correctly under all driving conditions. What can be done presently is semi-autonomous operation. These current vehicles cannot operate in driverless mode in city traffic. They can drive autonomously on the open highway but the human driver will have to take control of the vehicle in certain circumstances, such as road work or traffic jams, or detours. I have heard 10-15 years before fully autonomous vehicles will be made available. It will take that long to work out the software that can properly deal with all traffic situations.

Dumb question - why is this needed?

Because people won't need to own a car or your car can make money while not using it by letting it uber while you are not using it.

It will take a ton of cars off the road. Cities won't be cucked to parking lots and can redesign
