Suffice it to say that little gator did not render the van inoperable. The van should have been moved off to the side. IMHO that is.

Now, why would he ever need to exit the vehicle?
Have you seen the front?

Damn. Lots of gators crossing the roads this time of year. Saw 2 around Houma yesterday that had been hit.

I get kinda pissed when I see a small fender bender that happened in traffic (less than 10 mph impact) and the cars stay blocking the lane until the cops come. There are signs all over that say move wrecks to the shoulder. But people think the police are going to come and do CSI work on their car and need to preserve the scene.
As a retired cop I can't agree with this enough. They say the insurance companies tell them not to move, I always responded with the law says to get out of the road. Now if you are injured then don't move. No injuries, take a quick picture with your phone and move out of the road.

If it were a caiman there's a slight possibility it could have jumped high enough at the right moment to hit the bumper but there is no way an alligator that size comes close.

Not as dangerous as a certain type of person that insists on driving down I-10 between Gonzales and New Orleans in the left lane going 55-60 laying down in the seat and texting on their gov't paid phones refusing to get over.
You can say black people.

I don't think the van driver had a chance to move his van, nor did he exit the van.

Driver of the van was not the fatality. Driver of the Mitsubishi that rear ended the van died.

The original article was wrong. The van hit the gator and stopped almost immediately. The picture shows the gator right behind the van. The car behind the van couldn't stop and rear ended the van. The driver of that car died. Not the van driver. Very sad.

I was blowing down 290 in Houston doing about 70 and traffic started slowing up. This guy in a van with a flat was stopped in the far left lane. He was standing behind the van talking on his phone. His wife or SO was sitting in the passenger seat. What an idiot.
Trooper showed up and told him to immediately get off the road.

The picture shows the gator right behind the van, almost underneath the van. If he would have stopped after rolling over it, then rear-ended, don't you think the van would have moved more than just a few inches?

I was just clarifying that it wasn't the van driver that died. The conjecture was that the van driver hit the gator, stopped, and was killed.

Most European cars have triangle reflectors on the inside of the trunk lid
