I don't think I've ever heard something from Dr. Phil that wasn't in agreement with complete and total common sense. Sure, his show has devolved more into the Jerry Springer realm in recent years compared to how it was years ago, but the guy still dishes out sound advice compared to just about all the other hacks.

A young attorney came into my office and told me the salaries being offered for entry level positions were around $40k, no higher than $45k. That's just absolutely incredible to me. These people have so much student debt, some have young families. This economy is so fricked.

But with a year or two of hard work they have the ability to make well into six figures. It's the same with doctors. We graduate with huge amounts of debt and unless you find a hospital that will help you pay it off you're stuck with it for most of your adult life. The median income for most non-specialist doctors is $150K - $180K which is a good salary. Now, factor in the over $200k in debt right out of school and that salary shrinks considerably. Thrown in any specialty and all of these numbers go up. However, if you keep working it pays off.

Dr. Phil is a fraud but the points made in the OP are legitimate and open to discussion.

• 58% more 18-29 year olds scored on the Narcissism Scale than in 1982.
• 40% believe they should be promoted every 2 years regardless of performance.
• 4x more would rather be an assistant to a celebrity than the CEO of a major corporation.
• More 18-29 year old live with their parents than with a spouse.
• 10% of all grandparents live with at least one grandchild.

I feel like this study is yet another random example of pointing out the negatives about a generation and not necessarily diving deep into the actual statistics. Also, the age range of this study is kind of fricked. Most 18-21-year-olds are at university, community college or the military. A better study would be to look at the 22-32 age range imho.

They are giving out multiple choice spelling test now at schools. These kids have zero chance in life.

icking the economy up is a fact. The older generations fricked the economy up. Not much debate about it.

OK, now what? Does the millennial generation ever get past that and overcome the challenge or do they stay where they're at complaining about it? (Notice I'm not accusing you of this, just those that to whom it applies).
Cause from what I'm seeing, all these ills in the world aren't going anywhere so young people can either try to overcome them or be pathetic their whole lives. What are they gonna do?

My brother graduated from law school and few years ago in the heart of the "recession". He got a job making a lot of money. He did go to a top ten law school and does IP law though.

The fact is, in this economy that someone has to work harder, be smarter and not make the mistakes that previous generations could get away with.

Should you really be taking advice from talk show host in the first place?

I think we are just assigning blame right now.

The general goal for Americans is to leave a better country, more money, and more opportunity for their children. My parents generation royally fricked this up.

Sidenote - the media really highlights the shitty people of the millennial generation. Don't forget that a lot of us went and fought the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and SE Asia.

It's more of a glass ceiling. But, yes, it's possible. But doctors have it way better.

If you think this is the normal with all careers you are seriously misguided...and honestly stupid.

To make six figures....after a college and graduate degree I will have to work well over 6/7 years. Unless I jump into the right situation.....and the right situation is about 1 out of 10000000

No kidding.

Given the challenges faced, millennials will probably end up being way more resilient than X and the Boomers.

Mistakes were made...sorry. Paying a burger flipper 15 bucks an hour aint gonna fix it...nor will failing to put it behind you and get after the problem. Unbelievable things can be accomplished through hard work...Next to zero without it.

I mean, being Shaq's assistant and making 200k a year would be fricking awesome and you don't have shareholders bitching at you constantly.

Being CEO of a major corporation would pay insanely well, but your job security blows and your stress levels would be through the roof.

Millennials are going to save our world

Under no circumstances will this happen. It will be Gen X, Gen Y, and Gen Z that save the world. The Baby Boomers are a major part of our current problems. It is that generation (or a subset of it) that dominates our current political, entertainment, and academic environments. They disproportionately affect and influence the Millennial generation and have imparted their worst qualities on the Millennials.

There are some parts of Gen X and Gen Y doing it too, but it is the Baby Boomers mostly responsible. Mainstream X and Y despise the X and Y folks currently coddling the Millennials.

Gen Z comes after the Millennials and there will be strong ties between X, Y, and Z while the Millennials get pushed away to be the lost generation that the rest of us will have to pay for due to their incompetence.

While Millennials pine away for their Baby Boomer mentors and heroes, the rest will save the world.

quote:

urban sprawl that has created so many problems for our economy and environment.

False. The 'sprawl', or suburbs, has created a huge economic impact with construction of buildings, roads, more business opportunities and so forth. And it is the inner cities that are more polluted. For example, see Detroit or Chicago.

Also, the suburbs used to be the place where affluent people moved to to get away from the problems of congested cities. But because the Millennials have made inner cities a haven, the costs have gone sky high and now the safe havens, economically speaking, for the poor are being eaten up by gentrification.

In short, it's a vicious cycle the Millennials have started and it's not a good one. In about 5 years or so you're going to see Gen Z come out and verbally castigate the Millennials, in force.

quote:

Their tendency to move to urban downtowns and city centers will create walkable cities and reduce dependency on automobiles which will transform our society.

It has already created insanely high rent increases, increased rates of homelessness, an inability to live independently, and reduces their ability to get additional schooling or occupational training or other opportunities because they become anchored to one place, and they have little ability to travel which reduces their exposure to new ideas and compromises the economy of areas that depend on tourism.

X, Y, and Z will be repairing the damage done by Baby Boomers and Millennials for quite some time.
