I only opened this thread to learn what a brake tag was. Turns out they don't know how to say inspection sticker.

I assumed the generation prior to me (pre-70s), going back to the first license plates and tags, called them "brake tags" because in the 1930s to 1960s maybe that is all that was really looked at (can this thing stop, or is it a death machine?)

Grew up in Bogalusa in the 40s and 50s and once a year everybody at about the same time had to drive to the city hall and got "brake tags" from the police. They made sure your car could stop, your horn worked and that your lights worked. They asked my dad to turn on his windshield wipers and I, in the passenger seat, reached under the dash and moved the wipers back and forth. We got our brake tag.

La RS 32:1308 - false certificates

Fine is up to $500.

ETA: and fake ones are easy to spot if you know what to look for.

But if caught, the penalty for forging one may be criminal (whereas the penalty for not having a current one is, what, a $150 fine?)

It certainly won't pass if the plate is run. They cross reference the inspection data and it won't match.

I'm talking about the simple visual look at intersections where they waive you by if it looks right.

I have called them brake tags since the 1970s. Outside of Louisiana, I never hear the term brake tag. The last time I got one in LA, a guy in BR failed my car because of some emissions BS that was going to cost $600 to fix. I tore off the big orange sticker the SOB put on my windshield, drove to Madisonville and passed the inspection there.

Do locals in New Orleans still put a piece of paper with "License Applied For" in the spot where their license plate belongs? I used to love to see those because they summed up south LA pretty well.

Do they go on the brakes?

You can't get an inspection sticker outside your emission monitored parish ( Baton Rouge).

the term "brake tag"...

It's the same as the "light bill" for your electricity bill.

This New Orleans city government website recognizes that "brake tag" is an acceptable term.

What was the law in the mid/late1980's?

You sure about that? I've never gotten one from the parish I live in. I always go to the neighboring parish.
