I disagree. I have watched my dog over time learn how to get into things. Then after trial and error over the course of a couple weeks, succeed and then remember how to succeed from that point on. If that's not episodic memory, then I don't know what is.

I bring my dog to the park every Sunday and he knows its Sunday before I even get out of bed.

No, I wouldn't say that. Barking, chewing, digging, chasing would be instinct. A genetic predisposition to action given to them by their breed and species.

Learning to piss outside, "crating up", fear of vet offices, leash walking, etc... are not. I think.

if dogs don't remember what happened yesterday how do they remember or recognize anything that has occurred before today?

I think it's more in terms of dogs don't remember that something happened yesterday, not that it happened at all. Like when you leave and come back, doesn't matter if it's 8 minutes or 8 hours, the dog is just as excited to see you no matter what time, because they have no time frame reference or whatever you want to call it. They don't remember when they went to the vet and got shots, just that they did.

Or something like that.

So you're saying his dog is scared of that area without consciously knowing why?

Seems like evolution would, or should, have let it consciously recognize what might kill it (a car in this instance) via a memory.

I've always heard this, but there's definitely a difference in reaction. If I go home at lunch, my dog will be happy and jump on me.

If I pick him up or return after a week long vacation, he jumps on me repeatedly for several minutes and whines like a baby for a half hour on the way home.

How else do we explain the videos of the soldiers coming home to dogs where the dogs lose their shite for several minutes? That doesn't happen normally, I'm sure.

Learned behaviors that are remembered are not the same as remembering what happened the day before. Don't be naive.

Yes, because I taught my dog to shake when we got to the street he was hit by a vehicle on.

Heck, I can go to the street to check the mail and my dogs act like I've been gone for years when I come back in. Alternatively, I've come home from work before and they've been like... yeah, ok... whatever.

Ehhhhhh.

From what I understand, they form memories and understand what happened in the past, they just don't understand the concept of time like humans, so if you smack him 2 hours ago or 5 years ago they don't understand the time difference between the two, just that both events occurred in the non-current time. Maybe they vaguely understand time concepts, but it has to be a WHILE.

I think a lot of people feed in to confirmation bias when thinking their dog is so much more pumped after a week instead of a day.

Studies show that a dog can learn to do certain tasks by only observing, and the can learn these tasks after a very short amount of time. How would you explain this? The dog would have to dial up some sort of memory to be able to mimic what they just observed.

I had a dog that could tell time

My dog can do both. He knows the time my wife gets home from work each day and sits on back patio. Without seeing the car, when she passes on the side of the house he looks over to the garage waiting for her to drive up.

When I come home from traveling for work, he reacts completely different than if he saw me the day before.

So I say he remembers, he offers no other support of being intelligent however

No, he can just hear her car from a whole lot longer way off than you can.

My dog knows the sound of cheese opening. She doesn't have to re "learn" it everyday.

Count mine in when she hears me pulling out a garbage bag to replace the existing one that I take out to the trash can.

My dog as a kid learned all of our names...could tell him go get/find "Steve" and he'd go straight to their bedroom or search wherever they were. Also there are reports of stray dogs in Russia that have learned to use the subway system.

Saw a story the other day..... Dog would catch the bus and take itself to the park, the owner would meet the dog later.

My dogs know exactly who certain people are and exactly what they drive. They pull in and the just get excited, somebody else pulls in and they go ape shite...

My dog wants to go outside at the exact same time everyday, which is 5 minutes before my wife gets home. It can't be the hearing the car thing because if she's late he still wants to go out at the same time.
