I had a dog that broke it's kneecap. The vet said if the surgery didn't work, he would have to amputate.

He was able to make it work. Cost me 1250. Looking back on it, my ex and I separated a month later and she took the dog. I should have gone with the amputation for like 300.

Had surgery on my lab when he was 5.
Total cost ended up around $4500 and took around 2 months for regular mobility, 6 months for full.

Exactly one year later his other one blew out and had to repeat.

I knew a girl who paid over $4k for her dog's knee replacement (it was a mut that she got for free). I told her she was insane.

I've never heard of a dog blowing its knee out. How does one accomplish this sort of thing?

IIRC, it was more of a tendon issue. I think the tendon that keeps the joint together detatches and the two sides of the joint don't meet properly which causes cartilage damage and pain. They essentially put a steel plate in the knee to keep it aligned.

Good news... Strained the acl no tear. No tennis ball for 2 weeks or craziness... this is gonna be hard considering he has a ton of energy.

Be careful. My dog did the same thing several years ago. About a year after her injury, she actually tore her ACL. The vet said it was really shredded once he operated & believed the initial sprain might have been a partial tear because of the damage he saw when operating. She recovered well & had been back to normal for several months when I saw her limping up a little hill in our yard. I knew right away she tore the other one.

Really common for a dog to tear the other ACL once they tear the first one. Hardest thing is keeping them kenneled & restricting their activities after surgery. My dog was 6 or 7 when she did it. I can't imagine trying to limit a young golden retriever.
