Dog food amounts?

New territory for me in feeding this dog. All of our previous dogs ate like cats. Picky. You could leave food out all day and they'd come back and finish.
My dog now eats like a horse? And GULPS like someone will take it. Since a pup I have always messed with her while eating. Petting her and talking to try and make sure she is not food aggressive. She never growls or snaps. But gulps faster. I worry about giving her "bloat". I also worry that she's not getting enough. I've never seen her full.
I've read on some pet sites to feed until they stop eating. To try that one time so you can know that amount? Have any of you ever tried this method?

Always make sure you dog rests after eating and for at least 1.5 hours before exercising. This will help prevent bloat.
This will also help:
Resting after eating is very important.
Don't overfeed. Follow feeding guidelines. Cut back if your dog is not active.

We feed our lab one cup (Newks plastic cup) of dog food every morning.

Holy shite, what site says to feed the dog until they stop eating? That's horrible advice

Have you tried reading the recommended amounts on the bag?

80lb lab, no more then three 8oz cups per day.

It's all about caloric intake. Give the dog the appropriate amount of food a day. If the dog isn't out of shape, bloat is never an issue.

It depends on the quality of food that you're feeding your dog, too.
I have a little (23 pound) cocker spaniel.
She's never a big eater, but Blue Buffalo goes a long way.

I've always just kept a dry food feeder and free-fed my dog. No problems here.

My 14 year old basset collie gets fed twice a day, 1/2 cup of Taste of the Wild and he does just fine.

The bowl posted above was great advice. It slows the dogs eating down tremoudlsly but if you want a cheaper solution just put a big rock in their bowl and it will do the same thing. Since this is the OT and everyone is a baller, buy the bowl because it looks better.

Aren't you the poster who was thinking about getting rid of his dog after a few months, but then the dog finally grew on you and you kept it?
Glad to see it worked out for you!

Yeah, but you don't give them an unlimited amount of food. This is usually for puppies, when they stop eating what you give them, take the excess feed away. Giving a dog unlimited food until it stops eating it terrible advice.
Feed the amount the dog food you buy recommends and monitor your dogs weight.

I've heard of people using tennis balls as well.

Same as our dogs. Their evening meal is usually at 5pm. It's like they can tell time....if I'm 10 minutes late they are both sitting in front of me with that "ummm, hello, you better feed me now" look.

How did people and pets survive before the Internet? By trial and error, figure out how much your pet will eat before becoming overweight. If there are any nutritional issues, then your vet will probably spot them. It's not that hard.

It is meant to give a frame of reference. They went so far as to say that final amount could be halved to feed the dog twice. It was not meant to be a feeding routine. Just feed until the dog leaves a bit in the bowl.
We've looked into the bowls with irregular bottoms. I'm afraid she will just eat those protrusions off.

They can tell time. Their stomachs are excellent clocks.

Yep. Lol
That dog is my baby now. She only pisses if somebody new is allowed in the house. She gets ecstatic and pisses.
Damn dog looks like Ol' Yeller'. Yeah, I'm getting rid of old Yeller.
