Dog apparently has a torn/ruptured ACL - anybody go through this?

A little over 9 years old, awesome awesome dog - love him very much. First significant health issue of his life. Back left leg - went to vet today and he's all but sure it's ruptured/torn.
Happy to pay for surgery but wanted to see if anybody has any tips/advice? Sir Winston is on anti-inflammatories and dog glucosamine/chondroitin as well as Duralactin (just started the first and last today).
Surgery is a no-brainer if we're expecting at least 3-5 more years, yes? He's very active and walks up to 5 miles a day so I'd hate to have to curtail that with an unrepaired knee.
TIA

I know someone, who over the course of a few years, had to have 2 replaced on her Aussie. Dog did agility at first, then obedience competitions after surgery. Great results on both legs and the dog lived a long life.
My dog was a street dog for a long time and had a bad injury to his left knee. It healed so that there was no movement of the patella. Had surgery before he became mine and you would never know.

It's the end of the road for your dog sorry M8. He'll never get to see MAGA in action.

Yeah it's well over 50% rate apparently that once you get one done the other will go. Not so much the money just the ordeal and stress. But I feel like 2 years of quality life per leg/knee would be the barometer and thinking optimistically I think my guy is comfortably in the "do it" range. Just want to see if anybody has any other experiences or thoughts...

Spare the dog, but put down that god awful outfit you're wearing in the second pic.

Sir Winston is very lucky to have you.

For both? I was quoted $1600 for one which includes the anesthesia, rehab gear, and teeth cleaning while he's out

My dog was 7 or 8 when her first one tore. Biggest problem was restricting her movement. Recovery went well. She blew the 2nd nearly 2 years later. Noticed the recovery was a little slower the second time. Vet & I both guessed the slower recovery was due to age. Harder for a dog nearly 10 to recover than one only a couple of years older.

I know someone who got it done at Texas A&M and did well. My question would be his quality of life with/without the surgery. If he can't get around, it's a no brainer, as you say. But if his mobility isn't hindered much, don't put him through it. Athletes always get the surgery. Ordinary people sometimes get along without it.

Did it with my lab. Results were fantastic.

Yep - both of you address my problem. 4 or even 2 years ago it's a no brainer. But is his improved quality of life worth all the stress at age 9.5 and again at age 10.5?
What is the rehab for him like WITHOUT the surgery versus at least once (and likely twice) WITH the surgery?
Have reached out to a vet friend who lives out of state to see what she says.

how old? Do you think my guy's age factors in much? Tremendously?

How much does a new pup cost?

If money isn't the issue then it's a no brainer. If you decided not to do it and he limps out the last couple years you'll feel like shite. If he was getting around well, and the average age for his breed is 12+ I'd do it without hesitation.

Definitely how I'm leaning right now - good summation as well. But sometimes by asking you can uncover some amazing supplement or rehab program that you wouldn't otherwise hear about. Doesn't sound like that's the case here.

Our 10 yr old 20lb JRT had the tightrope procedure in December. $700. The immobilization for 6-8 weeks was tough but he's doing well now. Won't ever be 100% but much better than not being able to put any weight on it like before.
