The one positive aspect of removing TOPS is that it should drive down the cost of tuition. To many students on a free ride and the curriculum to apply and maintain have always been a joke.

Any attempts to raise the standards for tops were deemed racist

In GA it's called HOPE. And I believe you are right it is a 3.5 or higher to get HOPE along with around a 1200 on the SAT. Most kids take that out of highscholl there (or at least I did and the people around me did)

3.5 gpa and minimum 25 ACT should be the requirement for the lowest level of tops. 4.0 and over 30 for the highest level. The way it is now it's just a handout to average students. And admission standards to LSU, Tech, ULL should be higher than they are. Let SE, UNO, ULM take the next level of students. Get rid of SUNO for sure and turn a few others into 2 year schools where students can earn their way into the higher level schools.

I'm fairly certain you need a foreign language?

It has to be "fair" for all

And hell, we're dropping requirements to play ball, as well.

We're sure setting our expectations high, huh?

this, when I was in high school in the mid to late nineties, 2 years of foreign language was a requirement, which is why I did not receive TOPS.

Requiring any more would discriminate and you would end up with 90% white instituions.

Yup. Will also lead to a lot of the introductory level teachers getting canned as well since there will be less students coming in.

Nah, asians and indians are already a higher percentage.

Can you imagine a campus without barking and frisbee?

Can you only imagine?

TOPS is a joke and is definitely in need of reform

Just talked to my 1st period class about it and even most of them said that a 2.5 GPA and a 20 on the ACT is ridiculous. These are 17-18 year old kids who know that TOPS needs major reform, not elimination.

FYI a 2.5 at a higher level school and a 2.5 at an inner city school is wayyyyyy different.

My brother attended Belaire, and basically going to class gets you a 3.0, actually doing your work got him a 4.0.

It's a joke.

discriminate how and against whom?

I hate that shite. Whose problem is it if some students who currently qualify for the watered down and bullshite TOPS requirements would no longer qualify if they tightened up the requirements?

I wouldn't have qualified. I guess that's what happens when you sleep during class, don't do homework and spend all your time smoking pot.
