Dodge Viper plant closing for good on 8/31

Car is going out of production. Again. The low sale numbers aren't a surprise to me but the inability to meet 2018 safety standards is. The car was revived in 2013 - Did Dodge simply not anticipate the safety changes?
Things that doomed the car:
- no automatic transmission (lazy affleunt boomers don't want to shift)
- Steady increase in performance by the Challenger (itself an old car)
- Pricing was probably too high
- Brand new Viper in 2013 was outrun by old bodystyle Corvette ZR1

Some of the biggest complaints I've seen were that the ride was terrible. Did it have an adjustable suspension?

Standard transmission driver guy is almost as bad as skinny jeans guy

can't remember the last time I saw a Viper on the road

That is one beautiful car, but it had some serious performance issues for the price. It couldn't hang with Corvettes or Ford GTs on a track, so they put this huge rear spoiler on it to create downforce. But the spoiler was so big that it slowed down the top speed on the straights.
They will bring it back in 10 years.

Had no idea those things were still being made.

A car like that shouldn't have auto transmission

Have never heard of anybody say, "yea, I want a viper, but that Challenger "

Agree 100%

Chevy>>>>>>Dodge
In all honesty, the car needed traction control... I get they were trying to make it a "driver's car"... but in reality, with that much HP-weight ratio, and being solely RWD, it's a bit much for a lot of people

Typical Dodge
Looked beautiful but couldn't perform to standard

Bring back the Stealth!!!

Not wanting a standard doesn't mean lazy. At one point a standard was the only way to go for power and speed but with technology advances heavy duty trucks and sports cars are now more efficient and shift far faster with an automatic than a human could possibly do. Their is still benefits to both but by no means does it mean you are lazy because you have an AMT or Automatic.

If you want to sell more that 600 a year you have to have a no-shift option.
Most Corvettes are autos, by like 2:1 vs manual IIRC.

The performance numbers started to overlap which is never a good thing for the halo car. Auto marketing 101.

Stealth GT Twin Turbo. Car was an animal. First (and only) time I broke 140.

Guy who says he doesn't like standard transmissions but really can't drive one well is as bad as mom's basement dweller.

One of my favorite cars. Every generation of them are just awesome looking. I'll have one one day. Hopefully one like this:

Porsche learned that is completely not true with their GT3. The PDK is excellent and faster than the same manual car. Customers want to shift their weekend cars. The 911R was supposed to the end of the road for the manual and the markup more than doubled the MSRP. Now that you can get a GT3 with a manual again, the Rs don't sell with a markup.

They look awesome, but it was never a good sports car.

The original was pretty badass looking for the time.
