We only had a couple of options, and the MOAB was one of them. Sending in an ODA to seize a position like this would have been the height of stupidity and a tremendous waste of military resources.

it was 3 tunnels and 36 terrorist, plus munitions. Are you telling me, this was the best option for use of resources? We have a limited supply of these, they are extremely expensive as well. I realize its fortified, but come on man, we go up against far more than this routinely. This was a shock and awe display for ratings.

Again, I have no problem with using large expensive weapons when they are used for comparable targets.

Shouldn't these bombs be used more around Kandahar and the southern region?

Again, seriously, do you realize how difficult it is to dislodge people from a fixed position? Multiply that times ten for being in the side of a mountain.

We absolutely do not go against this with any sort of regularity. Not at all. 999 times out of 1,000, if we're attacking fixed positions (and not being ambushed), it is a house, and a JDAM does the job.

I don't think you can picture in your mind what this is really like, but you're not getting it.

It's a show of force. It's sending a message that even if you dig in and try to fight, we can still kill you with very little effort. It also shows off our arsenal to the world (N. Korea) just to give them a little something to think about.

We used 1, it's not like we dropped then en masse.

Generally you would need 6 people for every 1 entrenched.

That's because the numbers dictate a bunch of yours will get smoked by theirs.

Then you have to deal with a steep assed mountain whilst people are shooting at you from prepared positions and that have the ranges doped in.

Then you have to deal with something going wrong, because something ALWAYS goes wrong.

The use of a MOAB is perfect here. The concussion would have killed anyone in those tunnels. And, again, the use of the MOAB here was I think more directed at North Korea rather than the unlucky recipients. All the better we killed some bad guys.

***ETA, I fricking directed this at the wrong dude.

Crazy to think the magnitude of nuclear power compared to conventional. This is the biggest conventional bomb we know of ever built, but the original nuclear bomb from WWII was significantly more powerful

Russians have a bigger bomb I think. But it's a different breed I think. FAOB

Probably was a strategic cache/staging area. It's destruction will disrupt their operations for quite a while.

I've seen MOAB videos before. Honestly they are always under-whelming.

You're still having to blow the tunnels even after you extract the men in them if you send our guys in there.

This was probably the cheapest option.

Not to mention the chance that it staves off elevated conflict with NK, which would cost as well. An ounce of prevention and all that.

And anyway, we already spent the money on these things, might as well use them to blow up some terrorists and make fat boy shite his pants.

Exactly right. Sometimes getting at their logistics (which this bomb was targeting) is even better than killing a bunch of fighters.
