Once I hit the $15k mark, I thought all was well. Two weeks later both turbos went and I was in it too deep not to fix the thing. Same story goes on and on because what is a diesel worth without an engine? Been trying to get rid of it, buy it breaks every two weeks like clockwork. Nobody will buy a broken truck

Dealerships are borderline criminals.

Not to say that there aren't plenty of mom and pop shops that are just as bad, but I would never bring my car to a dealership unless it was for work under warranty. Even then, I bet they look for ways to charge you for something not under warranty.

I knew the Ford F250 diesels were disasters, but $28,000 over 4 years has to be a typo.

That's pure insanity.

Replace it with a Cummins or a Duramax or start getting comfortable with a gasoline engine.

$28,000 over 4 years is insane....even for a Ford diesel.

Went and sho nuff, it was sitting behind the shop with nothing going on. Picked up the truck and brought it to the only other shop open today that specifically works on diesels

What did they tell you? Or did you just walk out back, get in, and leave?

Should call and ask where your truck went.

I literally changed the Oil again the next day. This was at Mossy Oldsmobile in March of 1998.

A freaking flower pot. And a brand new car, getting it's very first non factory oil change.

My friend Tony had a lot of issues like that with a Ford f250. The manufacturer actually bought it back. Then he bought another f250 that all he does is complain about. Meanwhile, I have exactly $800 in maintenance in my truck in the last three years. Including all oil changes and a U-joint change and valve cover gaskets. Did all work myself.

Love my Tacoma, hat not having a four door.

For those of you considering a F250 6.4, my total (engine only) repair costs from August 2010 to now is $28,719.53.

Buddy, methinks you are well into lemon law territory at that point.

As to the original question, I have a huge trust issue with mechanics - at a dealership or not. I'm not really a mechanical guy - I can do the work if someone shows/helps me, but I just don't have the past experience, and I'm not good at just looking/reading something and getting at it.

FIL is a semi-retired mechanic and he helps me when he can, but there are cetain things he can't do anymore. Plus, we lived out of state for a few years, and I think every experience I had with a mechanic was one where I walked away feeling as if I had gotten screwed over.

I've finally found a place locally that I somewhat trust. Somewhat.

And I'm a guy. I can't imagine how bad the ladies get screwed over by mechanics.

I don't understand the appeal of the Ford diesels. They are the most problematic trucks I've seen and are incredibly expensive to repair.

Sadly, most of the people I know who ended up having terrible luck with the 6.0L models gave up and replaced them with the 6.4L truck when they started selling them. That engine was a joke as well.

Ford has done an outstanding job of replacing their 250's and other vehicles.

Needed a diesel, but don't now. I like the 1500 Z71's but the AFM fricks over all of the engines, and I am not willing to chance that. I also don't like how a 1500 crew cab is not available with a 6.5ft bed. I am trying to get into a 2500 gas for those exact reasons

Very, very true. My cab has been off 12 times already @ $1800 each time. Anything besides filling up the washer fluid and changing the air filter requires the cab to come off

One reason I've never bought extended warranty was not to have to phuck with them.

I pretty much trust my local dealer, only because my best friend is a mechanic there, and he's usually the one working on my car. So I guess I really just trust him.

No. Brought my car a while back for a shimmy I can feel in my steering wheel. They told me it was a bent wheel and they could replace all 4 for something ridiculous right under $4000. So, I got 4 new wheels AND tires from tirerack.com for about $1200. Not even cheapo tires, either, sporty Kumho tires. fricking ridiculous.
To top it off, that wasn't even the problem. I brought the car to Chabil's, have a warped front rotor.
