I use them for Warranty work only, then I have a couple independent shops to not have all my eggs in one basket. I'm responsible for about 15 vehicles at work, both gas & diesels. We buy new and generally don't have many problems. We had a '03 F-250 Diesel which got well into the $20k repair zone. We gave it away as a parting gift to a departing employee. I hope he enjoyed it. We enjoyed seeing it leave the fleet.

Personal use: my kids are in new Honda Accords (09 and 12 models) so they don't need a repair shop. My wife's Lexus goes to a Quick Lube place for Oil Changes and to Lexus of NO about every 20k miles.

My mom had a loose strut on her GL550, so I told her to bring it to the dealership to get them to tighten it up. She goes in and their answer to a loose strut is to scan the computer and reset some shite. Mom drives away, and as soon as she gets home, it is knocking again when she pulls up the curb.

Told her again to go there and tell them exactly what I said it was. Their answer was to replace the air/compressor suspension system without looking at the strut. Comes back home, and it is doing it again.

She goes back to the dealership, and they say that they can't figure out what is wrong with it, and that they are going to have to call the territory service guy about it. As soon as she gets back, I hook up the compressor and tighten up the nut, which takes me 5 minutes from start to finish. Viola, no more clunking

If she would've been out of warranty, that could have easily been $5k worth of repairs just to tighten a bolt on the bottom of a strut

Don't trust my Chevy dealer's SD. When a car manufacturer makes it a big headache to change an $12.00 headlamp....I don't trust them. I initially tried to take the lamp off my 09 Suburban myself but it wasn't a few simple screws and I was worried about scratching the paint by forcefully taking it out.

Went in and called the dealer and they said it needed to be done at the dealership. Asked what the price was and it was $150. "For a headlight?" I said. Said I would just consult the owners manuel and he said...good luck, and kind of laughed. Looked at the manuel and it said "do not attempt to replace headlight. Should be done by an authorized Chevy dealer only."

Really? Make something that should be quite simple that difficult for the common person to do just so they can gouge.

Ended up watching a YouTube video to see which screws to take off and in what sequence. Freaking 19 screws in all basically pulling apart your whole front end and side quarter panel for a damn headlight. Took me about an hour the first time but the second one went out a month later and I did it in half the time. Plus, they require metric sockets(9mm) and I only had standard. Borrowed my neighbors.

I've been driving one with AFM for 7 years now. No problems at all for 140,000 miles. Even if I ran into trouble later, I could probably replace the whole truck for what you've spent on repairs on that Powerstroke so far, and with less down time. I just ordered a programmer for my vehicle and I'll probably keep it around for at least another 3-4 years.

Ford and GM both have half ton crew cab trucks with 6.5' beds.....and they'd probably both be far superior vehicles for you if you aren't making a habit out of towing 4+ tons.

The 3/4 ton GM trucks with the 6.0L gas engine is a good choice if you do a lot of towing. The Express vans we used to keep with those motors held up very well. If they were not wrecked, they were good for 225,000+ miles.

Holy shite!! I took my truck there two weeks ago because the engine was running really bad. They called me back and said I needed a new engine. I said bullshite and picked it up that afternoon. The work ticket said because of miles on the engine and the sound it was making the it should be replaced. That was the extent of their diagnostic work. frick Supreme Chevy Caddy!!!

Took it to Berthelot's a couple of days later and they found a bent pushrod caused by Exxon gas. $287 dollar repair.

I have read about A LOT of problems caused by the AFM. Don't have the money anymore to get a newer one, so it would have to be am older one(with the majority of the problems). I'm not willing to chance it again. It sucks you can't buy a truck now without worrying about it grenading in a couple of years, but it is what it is.

The only ones I am willing to consider are the non-AFM 6.0 and 6.2, or a Tundra. I've been driving a 3/4 ton truck for a while, and nothing has broken but the engine. I used to tow 5-15k regularly, and the occasional over 20k. The 6.0 is as solid as it gets now, and easy to work on. I wouldn't be worried about a 3/4 ton drivetrain breaking on me

The 6.5ft bed F150s look weird. My buddy has one. A 2500 looks perfectly fine in a crew cab 6.5ft bed

Everyone hates on leasing but in my experience leasing is WAY cheaper than owning a car that is over 4 or 5 years old and you factor in repair costs.

Describes every trip I have ever taken to any shop. I am still not of the understanding why you can't tell them what you want fixed and just have them fix it.

Because they know most people won't question their "expert" opinion of what is wrong. And by adding on they make more money.

frick no.

especially the Ford dealership.

there was a recall on explorers a few years ago for some random reason.

anyway, my thermostat was broken within 48 hours of that visit and the brakes all of a sudden were rough. I had put new brake pads on myself a few months earlier. I listened to what they had to say but then eventually told them to piss up a rope.

made me wonder.

90% of the time, their answer is to plug it into the computer and do every step it says. Doesn't matter if it is the wrong thing, they do it. Don't need it don't, don't care. You're paying for it to not fix the problem.

10% of the time, the computer can't figure it out and they have to get one of the 2 actual mechanics to look at it

Yeah that is a big part of the problem with modern cars and mechanics. Everything is computer diagnostics. If the computer doesn't say it then it can't be the problem. It’s how they are being taught these days plug it in and follow the steps.

Never go to dealerships. You can take it in for a simple oil change and they'll come back with a list of things that "need" to be done to your vehicle. Told them I was only paying for the oil change and never went back.

Brought my car to a Dealer once because I just didn't want to mess with the problem. The SM asked me if I could come back another time because the only Tech they had(old man) that knew anything about that problem was home sick. God I hope he doesn't die anytime soon.
