I do sometimes when an opportunity arises. Once while checking out at an alberston's the cashier was complaining about the fast food available in the area. She had wendys for breakfast and didn't want Cane's for lunch because she already had it this week.

I asked her if she really eats fast food for every meal. She said that she did and her weight on her told me she wasn't lying. I asked her if she found it ironic that she works in a food store yet she eats fast food for every meal. I told her that she could by a pound of ham and some bread and feed herself for a week and not have to battle traffic and lines every day and be healthier.

She looked at me like I was the one that was stupid.

Yeah, but you actually have to make the sandwich

I worked at subway back in high school. I'm now in my second year of college.
I know how boring that job is. Particularly at the location I worked at. So everytime I go in, I'll engaged in small talk with the person making my sandwich. Only one person that I worked with still works there. So I'll tell them stories about when I worked there. I usually go in there 2-3 times a week so I've formed a relationship with all the people there. And they'll give me their employee meals or a free dozen cookies. Other places I go, such as a dollar general or similar store, I'll walk in and not even get a Hello or a "Do you need help finding anything?" So those stores, I won't even bother with small talk. I just get what I need and get out. It all depends on how busy they are. If I'm at a place where the cashier is a decent human being and they're not too busy, I'll try and engage in conversation.

There's just a certain gratification you get after you leave. Just reminds you that there are still decent people out in the world today.

So, sandwiches don't make themselves.

ya, there's a local sub shop I used to go to to get mom some soup, they had a huge variety

and I got to know the servers there pretty well too

I think it's more homey to know folks and be recognized.

A couple of weeks ago I made the mistake of asking the Walmart cashier how she was doing. Within one minute I found out that she was worried about getting her pay docked for taking off work to attend her aunt's funeral, that several of her cousins were involved in some drama that spilled over into real life from Facebook, complete with details that made my eyes glaze over.

Cashier at Rouses on Vets always wants to have a 5 minute convo with everyone. Most of the time, I'll have small talk but ring me up.
