If I know the cashier or someone I see regularly I'll say hello, but as soon as he/she hit the total button, I wind it up and keep the line moving.

I feel like this is the normal process at a local grocery store. I'd never strike up conversation at a place like Costco/Sam because it's entirely too loud in there. But grocery stores like Calandro's,Matherne's or Whole Foods are completely different.

Also, the whole "I'd be worry about holding up the line" argument sounds like BS. I highly doubt the majority of you care about holding up the line.

True story, I was in the check-out line at Target trying to get in and out.

Gave these to the young cashier (early 20's).

And she said, "I would let you go bareback on me."

Needless to say, I was taken back, because one, I did not expect this from a person working and two, she was very attractive for her age.

Long story short, I put back the condoms.

Texas grocery store chain. I guess I'd say its somewhere in between Walmart and Whole Foods. They're ramping up customer service and making the new stores they build pretty nice.

I exchange pleasantries and talk to them if they talk to me. Most are ready to get done and move on so I don't want to hold the line up.

I do while I'm searching through my coupon binder. Sometimes they let me get by with an expired one if we have good conversation

I'll chat a little if they chat first. I wouldn't say anything condescending like the world isn't fair, though.

Last week I was at 5 guys in Cary, NC. Ordered a burger with jalepenos, green peppers, grilled onions and hot sauce. I made some comment about all those peppers not hurting me. The cashier said...no, but you may have to wipe twice later when you go to the bathroom.

I routinely strike up a conversation with the cashier. Nothing of any substance, just being friendly. If I'm a regular they'll sometimes give my "loyalty card" extra stamps, which is nice.

I almost got smoked yesterday pulling in a parking lot on Siegen. Old hag pulled into the lot in front of me and probably forgot where the frick she was because she came to an abrupt stop leaving my truck sitting halfway in the lane.

I'll make small talk if the cashier looks receptive. Otherwise it's a polite "Hello, how are you?".

Once my transaction is complete, I walk away.

Sure...I'm charming and people like me, so yeah.

Ah...see, there's your problem. No...I tend not to butt into the conversations of others unless there is something that takes places that clearly invites my input, like one of them looks to me for my opinion or outright asks for it. Feeling the need to hand out what I consider to be life advice, as right as I usually think I am, is kind of sort of not my place at the check out line.

That being said, you don't like hearing people bitch at the counter in front of customers...I'm with you there. I worked tons of retail years ago...that's kind of a no-no and rubs me the wrong way, but never so much that I feel the need to set them right. If it bothers me so much (and it has yet to do so) I'll just decide to not go back there.

All the time, but it's typically to explain why I'm buying certain items together like anal lube, duct tape, a baby pool, and 15 bottles of hair gel type stuff.
