It depends how many people. One couple with an extra person is a third wheel, 2 couples and an extra person is 5th wheel.

Some third wheels are fine like the Morgan and the Trex, other third wheels are pieces of shite like the Spyder and Robin.

I always thought fifth wheel campers used a gooseneck hitch just to help with weight distribution, guess I never paid much attention

They generally use a 5th wheel. Long trailers, like horse trailers and the like are typically gooseneck
