I've said that to my wife countless times. I don't understand it...it seems one would be strong enough to kick the habit. Or, they just don't care. I love the fact that my health insurance is so expensive due to the smokers that are averaged into my company's group health insurance plan.

I don't question their intelligence. I know plenty of very intelligent people who are/have been smokers.
I do question their right to give me any dietary advice. "You use artificial sweeteners? You eat meat?" Blah blah fricking blah. Shuttup, carcinogen inhaler.

Teenagers don't really smoke tobacco nearly as much as they used to. At one time, 30%+ of teenagers smoked, now it's less than 10%. Most teens have realized that smoking tobacco is pointless. Those teens that do smoke mostly smoke weed exclusively these days.

People equating cigarettes to artificial sweeteners or a Coke are sadly grasping for anything to justify their lack of strength to quit a habit that is killing them and others around them.

Hell, there's many highly intellectual people through out history who've commited suicide. That's pretty bad for your health. Just because someone's smart, doesn't mean they are going to make every single correct decision as to how to manage their lives. You can know the detrimental effects of something and still make the decision to do it.
Also, if more people were able to smoke a cigarette every now and again and not make it habitual, I think we'd have a lot different opinion of smokers.

Mental illness is found in the intelligent population at a much higher rate than those of average intelligence.

TONS of post-doc cig smokers out there. I'm not sure what you measure intelligence by, but having a doctorate in a STEM subject is probably a better indicator than bad habits.
