I already posted a message re: preferred method for coffee, but want to let you know about the coffee we use. Ruth's Blend from Try Me Coffee Mills. Their office is located on France St in Marigny. The company will deliver whole beans or ground, or you can pick up your coffee at their office, but must call first. This coffee is not sold in grocery stores. First tasted it at a little coffee shop in the Quarter and had to know what it was, that was over a year ago and Ruth's Blend is the only coffee we have used since then. Happy to help.

I own a Keurig and have for a couple years now, but the quality just is not there. I used to have a drip and whether I grounded the beans myself or not, the quality of taste was just better.
No plastic. The container is basically a filter. Super fast.

Try the Bunn MCU. Using the pulse mode brews about as strong a single cup as you'll get out of the k-cups. Also comes with adapter to use your own ground coffee or use pods. Only downside to this system is it doesn't have a water reservoir so you have to fill the water each time.

Have all three. Given my coffee intake, the drip machine gets the most use. The French Press is used when I have time to really relax and enjoy good coffee. The Keurig is used in dire situations.
Can anyone vouch for a Chemex? Do you prefer it to the French Press?

Always made fun of people that used one. Until I was given one as a gift. Best cup of coffee you can get.
This.
I got an after-dinner cup of coffee from a restaurant not really expecting much. Waiter told me it was French Press, which is why it was taking a bit longer than I was expecting. It was amazing. No ounce of bitterness. Sooo smooth and rich that I drank it black (and I never do that).
I highly recommend it if you don't mind the extra work.

Have had a Keurig for years but this thread got me fixated on a change. Picked up the Ninja yesterday.
Holy shite. That's just awesome coffee. And the features are awesome too.

I've never liked the way a Keurig tastes.
Drip FTW.

I invested in a Jura coffee/espresso machine and it's awesome. Just fill the hopper with beans and keep the water tank full and viola, coffee made with freshly ground beans under pressure so it retains the flavor and crema. Also the temperature is controlled so it's not boiling hot which can ruin the flavor - the taste of coffee really mellows as it cools.
A Keurig is ok if you use the right preparation. Wegmans and Whole Foods sell the little filter bag K cups so it's not plastic and the coffee is actually decent. The actual coffee K cups all taste the same to me - sort a burnt taste with hints of actual coffee. For a large pot I just use a vintage Mirro pour over stove top pot.
Sort of off topic but I highly recommend "A Film About Coffee" for all coffee lovers. It's really interesting to see where specialty coffees come from.

As a couple of people mentioned here - if you are looking for a "smart" coffee machine that brings then convenience of a Keurig, but tastes like coffee, get a ninja!!
Very easy to use, can brew various amounts automatically using the correct amount of water, can brew over ice, and makes strong, delicious tasting coffee. Can have coffee set to automatically brew at a certain time.
Best $100 ever spent. frick Keurig or any of these fake coffee makers.

I'm not a coffee common sewer but when I do drink it, I prefer drip. Keurig is too weak.

Bad drip is almost as bad as Keurig. But in the last several years a lot of companies are putting out high quality drip or auto pour over makers that aren't THAT expensive. Better temp control, better materials.
Of course, if you don't grind and buy old coffee, it won't matter that much.

quote:Seriously brah, check out the aeropress. Basically very similar to the french press, but works better and faster.
French press is the way to go.
I get the temp at 180-200F and pour over it and strain after 1 min. Drip over Keurig, but Aeropress over everything else.

Thank YOU!!!
Finally in 6 pages somebody mentioned Nespresso, which is like what Keurig would be if it were not custom-made for white trash, ya know much classier and producing a much higher quality coffee brew.
But seriously, is Nespresso just not big in the States right now?! Because it's on the level of Keurig here - again marketed much classier - and I don't think anyone's even heard of Keurig over here in Europe. Even in Italians get down with the Nespresso, and they know good coffee!
If not that then some sort of Italian espresso from a Moka - Lavazza or Illy.

Drip, drip drip, drip, drip drip.
True story. When my wife and I were just dating, we would go by my grandmothers house to visit and hope for some crawfish bisque. Always had coffee while sitting in the kitchen. The pot she used was a white porcelain drip pot. My girl had seen my Mamaw make numerous pots and decided to offer to make it for her.
Here's where I mention that my girls family had an electric percolator.
Well she filled a pot of water, then loaded the grinds in the pot. Then she set the coffee pot into the pot of water, and sat down. After an uncomfortable pause, my Mamaw looked at me and smiled. She then asks my girl if she was expecting the water to climb up the outside of the coffee pot. See, my girl had kinda watched it being made, but not close enough. She missed my Mamaw pouring small amounts of boiling water with a coffee cup into the drip pot. Only after it was done, she would put the pot into the water boiling pot to keep it warm after turning the heat to simmer.
We have laughed for years.
Miss my Mamaw' crawfish bisque, and those great cups of coffee.

Depends on the K-Cup (I really like the Caribou coffee one), but I like drip coffee. I need to go back to whole beans and then grinding (I've been getting ground coffee and then using the filer)

Say my girl one more time.

I just heat a cup of water in the microwave and use instant coffee. If I want stronger coffee that morning, then I add more instant coffee.
