as part native american (1/8th), I see why its offensive. But IDGAF
It's not the mascot that's the problem, it's the name, which is basically a racial slur.
I'm not personally offended, but I think they should change it.
In the meantime, I follow Gregg Easterbrook of ESPN and refer to them as the Potomac Drainage Basin Indigenous Persons.
FWIW, I the Cleveland Indians mascot, Chief Wahoo, is a lot more offensive.

It's not offensive to me personally, but it is clearly a racial slur.

No, nor should anyone. "Redskin" is not and never was a prejorative term. It was always a term of endearment and a source of pride in the Native American community. Heck, the nickname "Redskins" for the Washington professional team was penned by Native Americans who played on the team!

I don't find these to be offending.

Do you find the "Redskins" mascot offensive?
As I'm not American Indian, my opinion on the matter is moot. It's always seemed like the vast majority of American Indians did not find the term to be racist.
It's not for me to say. If a majority of American Indians came out and say it was, I'd say that was the answer.
Until then, this sounds like a few people ginning up complaints from mostly white people who feel the need to go along with any complain by a minority for fear of being labeled racist.

It is settled then...the name has got to go. In this country the voice of the minority is all that matters

Those native americans couldn't care less about taking advantage of my gambling addiction.

Sorry, I am not familiar with that term!

I think the true litmus test on whether this name is offensive is to offer up renaming the franchise the "Black Skins" because it more properly represents the make up of the team.
The outrage would be volcanic. Especially in DC. Which would make the point entirely.
