Do you do anything when a co-worker leaves their job?

Someone here is leaving to go back to school. There has been:
2 lunches
cocktails
request for money for a gift card
email of accomplishments and glowing words (which of course people respond to)
card sent around for signatures

Similar scenario for someone else who left 2 months ago. In my opinion, it's kind of ridiculous. In the past, it was a lunch and a goodbye. Women. I blame women. Hippy ones too.

Sorry your co-workers are liked more than you are. You worried about your goodbye too now, huh?

If they leave and don't get fired our office will usually cater a going away lunch and compliment / praise / say goodbye at a morning meeting a couple days before they leave.

Entirely depends on the employee.

You quit after 9 months of work? Well, bye!

You've been a dedicated employee for a few years, we'll do a little lunch and dessert event for you.

You're retiring or leaving after a very long tenure? Gifts and a couple of events are appropriate.

We go out for a farewell lunch. Maybe some dessert. That's all. Your work seems a little over the top to me. If I were the one leaving it would make me a little uncomfortable.

When a guy in our shop leaves, it's tradition to pour water on him. Cups, water bottles and sometimes buckets are used. Everyone knows it and the guy comes in on the day he's leaving prepared to get soaked.

They're usually escorted out of the office by security and all company property (laptop, phone, ect, ect) will be confiscated immediately. I've seen it happen all too often.

if they quit we say, "Well, Bye!"

That does seem excessive imo.

We usually all sign a card and take a collection for a gift card. Maybe have a potluck the last person's day at work. Coworkers closer to the person may plan a get together at a restaurant so we can actually drink and wish them goodbye.

In the Navy we'd bring them to the titty bar. I think that's frowned upon in most civilian jobs though.
