Everyone knows Wikipedia can be edited to say anything, but everything can be fact checked and many things on Wiki are sourced and sited for you.

Do you consider it a credible source?

What's the point of this thread? There's not much more that can be said than what you already have.

Multiple studies have been done showing on average it is as accurate as a book encyclopedia. On average, obviously not always.

No. But it's a great starting point.

For settling an argument, yes.

For a research paper, no.

What's the old rule, use Wiki but cite the sources at the bottom?

Yes and no.

For instance, if the topic is something scientific or medical, I find that it's a very good source of quick info. Like if you want to look up quantum mechanics, or the side effects of some drug, or the traits of some breed of dog, I find it mostly credible.

On the other hand, when dealing with articles on real people, like actors/actresses, bands, and the like, it is not that rare an occurrence when I read entries that I know are not factual. I'm much more skeptical in those cases and will usually check other sources to ensure the validity of what Wikipedia says.

This. Anytime I'm curious about something I go to wiki and I trust it. If I were writing a college paper though I certainly wouldn't use that as a source.

Why would you not, most wiki's are sourced at the bottom of the page where you can check the validity yourself.

Wikipedia is a great source. Try to create an article and watch how much of a pain in the arse it is. If everything you say isn't cited perfectly, they will pull the article.

It's good for quick easy information for a general overview. It isn't a credible source for serious research. I have noticed inconsistencies and conjecture stated as fact before. This can happen with other sources too though.

For pretty established topics based on times and dates.. its a good reference point.. I wouldn't have use it as a source but would use the references to establish my work
