Do people still sit up with the dead at funeral homes?

having the body out is pretty primitive and weird imo. cremate my arse and throw me in the garbage. funerals are for the living, not the dead.

It's damn weird for sure. A dead body, a bunch of people watching a family grieve... And those that typically say "Oh, he looks so peaceful now." No shite lady... he's dead.

Hate funerals.

It's a relic of a different age....

My mother and her siblings all have burial policies...she and her siblings (and in-laws) have all elected to be cremated...even though we have a family grave in algiers

Well I'm from the country (canefields of da berry) and I've never heard of it. I have seen family members take pictures of the deceased in their casket which just seemed weird to me.

The Methodist do. Me and a couple friends stayed all with a good friend because the church wouldn't due to his sinful ways.

It really helped to be honest to grieve over his passing.

Cremation is my choice. Why give a substantial amount or most of the proceeds from life insurance or personal funds to go the "established undertakers"? I figure, whatever I leave behind would go to better serve my kindred or loved ones than some established corporate entity. BUT, to each his own AND their religion... Just my opinion.

Cailloue,

On a personal note...my grandmother was a Pitre from Algiers...

This is a common a jewish custom called Shemira. The Talmud maintains that the soul of a deceased person will hover the body, lost and confused, until it departs. The sitters soothe the soul of the deceased by reading Psalms. Back in the day, body theft was a real concern, so Shemira also served the basic function of guarding the body.
