There were some other books our teachers had us read. Do kids still read them?

The Headless Cupid
Watership Down
Cowboys and Cattletrails

and all the Hardy Boys books.

I'm kind of shocked at how few classics my kid has to read in high school. Almost every book their teacher forces them to read has something to do with Jews and the Holocaust. He's reading The Scarlet Letter right now, which is probably the first book he's read that I've read in school. And the damn teacher made them make a letter for one of their "sins" and walk around school wearing it all day long. I was kinda pissed.

Teachers don't teach shite anymore, they just put on history channel and let kids learn about alien pyramids and Bigfoot hunters.

I was always reading in class, and my third grade teacher told me she thought I was ready to move up to bigger books.

She handed me a copy of Johnny Tremain. I remember being intimidated by the size of it; I'd just been reading little kids books before then.

I bought a copy a while back to to read it again. I've forgotten a lot since that first run.

Teachers don't require reading books anymore during the summer. It's racist.

They do an Accelerated Reading program that allows the kids to choose their own books and then take tests afterwards.
