No it just depends on what villa you want to stay in. Lets say you want to stay at grand Floridian which is brand new most vacation club Does this differ depending on your Disney VIP status? I work in the Reservation department at a world-class resort and one of my reaponsibilities is building the Disney Vacation Club stays. I've made them with as little notice as ten days.. members would like to stay there so it books really fast. Some of the other resorts I'm sure some resorts like old key west or Saratoga springs are able to be made closer to go dat. If the resort is your home resort (resort you bought points at) you can book up to 11 months out. Non home resort you can. Book 7 months out.

These are meant to be more like condos. Anything above a studio has a washer/dryer. Most members understand that less maid service means lower yearly fees. I'm fine with it.

Also, there are communal laundry services for free

If you buy in the vacation club, do you get the same benefits as resort guests such as extended park hours?

its a disney resort. No different than the others other than there are condo-like options available. The rooms are even available for cash if they aren't booked by members.

The newer hotels are more like apartments while Old Key West is like a really condo with lots of room.

Hell is freezing over cause we actually agree on something. We joined same time as your parents give or take a year. Got couple a hundred points. Old Key West rooms are huge in comparison. I think we just missed out by a couple years lifetime free annual passes.

Other big pluses are you always stay on property of course, and you can eat a meal or two a day in the room. Just cooking breakfast in the room for several people every morning can save a small fortune.

I'm sure we agree on plenty more things we just express it in different ways.

Do you actually have to make the purchase while you're in disney, or is there a way to do it from home?

I bought in about two years ago after mulling it over for a while. There were a bunch of factors but mainly it made since financially. I bring my family every year and we typically stay at a Deluxe resort for 5-6 nights each time we go. That can range from $2500 to $3000 so it'll pay for itself in 7-8 trips. Some of the main draw backs is you don't get the free dining plan offers since you're not paying rack rate for a room and as others have said the room cleaning is not everyday. But you get other perks like discounts at restaurants and on annual passes.

We bought resale from home. Pretty sure you can buy direct from home as well.

As long as you have a resort reservation, yes. But if you are staying off-site, even as a DVC owner you do not have access to extra magic hours.

You also have the opportunity to purchase annual passes and things at different discounts throughout the year.

That being said, even with us going more than once a year, I don't think it is the right decision for us. Unless I paid cash for it, I would never consider it and I just don't want to dump $8k - $16k into something I have to give back.

What do you mean by "give back"?

Have you looked at renting points?

You don't own your DVC forever as your points have an expiration date. The expiration date is one of the biggest factors that rules it out for me.

Gotcha. I understand that then. It's one of the reasons we went for Saratoga over OKW. The life of the purchase. But we'll be in our 70s when it expires and will have gotten well over our money's worth if we use it as we plan to. And if something happens, the rental market would more than pay for the dues and we'd even come out far ahead.

Also, no one really knows what Disney plans to do when these deals expire. I don't even think Disney has a plan yet. Do they tear down and rebuild OKW in 2042? (although there are some contracts for longer when disney once offered an extension. people got screwed on that). Who knows? They'll want owners to stick around because they bring their families and spend the most money while there.

And that's exactly why I don't want to buy in. I would rather spend a little more, but have more flexibility and control then be locked in.

For $1500 I got a studio for 7 nights at the Beach Club from Thanksgiving through the first week of December. I'm amazed that someone would rent the same room from Disney for probably $400+ per night.

Like with DVC, we need to book 11 months out so it requires some planning if we want the better deluxe resorts but it saves thousands of dollars.

Have been in it since 2002. Intitally bought at Beach Club, then added on at Bay Lake Tower. It works for us. Will gladly answer any specific questions you may have.

That's an excellent deal. Did you find that yourself or an agent?

Crazy, right? My dad just unloaded almost 500 points to help pay for a 3 week all-inclusive Mediterranean vacation next summer...

I have been using David's DVC for a few years now.

LINK

He charges $14/point, and even he has gone up through the years), but he takes care of everything. rental agreement, contacting owner, looking for the points, etc.)

He also has "last minute deals" he e-mail about monthly which sometimes have points as low as like $9.

I want to say my dad rented out his points at OKW for $11/p... At least that's how much he received for them after the agent took his cut. With dues being around $5/p, it wouldn't take long to make your money back just by renting them out.
