I saw a comment in another thread that the US hasn't won a war since WW2.

First how does one define "winning" a war in modern days?

And my contention is once you start introducing rules and restrictions on wars the only people who can "win" are the ones who don't abide by those rules and restrictions.

We won the invasions of Grenada and Panama. But that’s about it.

Nah. We just figured out the best way to win a "war" is to overthrow the other sides leader, rather than throwing a bunch of soldiers at each other.

Russia just won what would've been a long war over France in Niger.

France was ousted in December, Russia is moving in now

It depends on your objective. I think its certainly harder to win a war now unless you just level your opponent and who knows how many civilians with air strikes, and thats assuming they can't stop you or the world at large doesn't turn on you in the process.

War is also just fundamentally different now, and it takes a while to adapt. At the beginning of WW1 you still had guys going into battle with colorful outfits and swords, and it ended with artillery bombardments and trenches. We are in the middle of the evolution of combat right now.

The nature of WWII and what “winning” entailed in comparison to Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan is the difference.

In WWII we were fighting German, Japan and Italy in various countries that they had formally taken over. We defeated them there then occupied their homelands.

Korea and Vietnam were proxy wars where we never directly attacked the Chinese or Soviets. Obviously Iraq and Afghanistan we’re completely different animals.

Only way to win a war is to go total war.
Basically that’s what Israel is doing now.

Vietnam and Afghanistan we’re tactical victories but strategic/political defeats. It comes down to the will of the opposition… in both cases, their’s far exceeded ours.

IMO, a war is won when you dictate the terms of surrender and the opposition has no choice but to accept or be crushed, regardless of how unfavorable the terms are.

The only way to win a war is to break the opposition's will to fight.

In our first Gulf war, we quickly liberated Kuwait ending Iraq occupation. Just because we didn't take Iraq does not mean we did not win the war.

We crippled the Iraqi military, killing thousands of their troops and wiping out their tanks, armoured vehicles, and artillery.

Its much harder to win when you handicap your forces with ridiculous rules of engagement.

This is the answer. War once meant that we take you land, kill your men, enslave your women and children. Entire societies disappeared through warfare. What the US does not is what was classically referred to as a "police action".

I dont think its that simple.

Israel for example. Im not 100% sure every in and out of the conventions but im sure some of what theyre doing goes against it. However, they also have every right to go against it given what theyve dealt with the last 60-70 years and what happened to provoke this response.

That has a lot more to do with our foreign policy than anything else. Politicians want to control things that they don’t understand and end up costing the lives of many. Our military fighting capability is just fine. It’s the assholes in suites that make their lives so hard.

No the ability to win a war stopped once we allowed journalists to reside near battle. War isn't pretty. Killing people is not a fun sight. You also have collateral which obviously isn't good. Let the military do what it's designed to be and then you can win wars. We are led by pussies so any fight/war is basically a deadly version pussyfooting around with no clear win.

That’s just not true, but it is the common ideology.
