Any update on the idea of turning River Rd into the truckway instead of Nicholson? Having the 18-wheeler traffic down nicholson would almost ruin the atmosphere they are trying to create.

Downtown is definitely in the midst of a makeover. Lots of stuff going on/up down there. Matherne's means theres finally a grocery store so it can actually start to sustain residency. Unfortunately it's brutal to try to drive down there right around now with all the construction, but that's the nature of the beast. I don't have any links but they are also supposedly building a riverwalk/park thing on the levee over the next 5 or so years. All that reworking of the area around river road & Florida intersection is supposedly just the beginning.

Great thread

I just hydroplaned from the North gates on Nicholson all the way to Govt St

That must have been a truly terrifying experience.

This is the goal I believe. They are looking into possibly placing some roundabouts on Nicholson to prevent the trucks.

I believe they plan to narrow the shoulders as well to help with this.

I don't know if the roundabouts would stop the trucks. I live outside the US and have seen busses and trucks use roundabouts like it is nothing as long as they have the truck apron. Also after spending time in a country with nothing but roundabouts they are a billion times better than any damn traffic light, but I don't know if they can work well with a street car or the number of intersections along the nicholson corridor.

That part is still prelim, but I know it was talked about. There will be multiple pedestrian crossings over Nicholson, possible roundabouts, and narrowing of the shoulders. There was also some talk of some speed humps (really would hate this) but they are trying to do everything they can to get trucks off nich.

While this looks nice, one has to wonder what they're going to do about the violent crimes in the area. The area between campus and downtown is an absolute dump in its current state. A few new buildings isn't going to remove the locals

I thought I remembered seeing plans for a roundabout at Nicholson and Burbank and/or Nicholson Ext.

Great thread. Actually thought about doing something similar a few days ago.

Must have missed it: where's the loop to ease traffic from so much development?

Didn't you hear? Its going right over your house. Sorry man.... You still want it though right?

Baton Rouge should have built a loop years ago, but now its going to piss someone off no matter what without fail. Will take years of fighting before the years of construction.

The loop with a new bridge crossing the river in either WBR or Iberville would help keep the trucks off of this new corridor.

I spoke with an LSU police officer and he told me that the plan was to eventually divert the 18 wheelers to River Road. It only makes sense because having them speeding through campus is not only a cluster but dangerous as well.

Yes it is very dangerous. They need to make River Rd a min of 3 lanes if they do divert the traffic to it.

Absolutely, when the crack houses turn in to organic coffee shops and they are offered twice what their shacks are worth, they will leave.
