We are staying about 2 miles outside of Boston. We will be there July 1- July 6. We have never been. What are some of your recommendations as to what to see? We plan on going to a Red Sox game, renting kayaks, and renting bikes. We will more than likely walk around the Harvard campus as well

Stay away from Baton Rouge as long as possible. You'll thank me later.

Did not like the duck tour at all but they do let the kids drive the boat in St Charles harbor
For an awesome experience, do the batting practice tour before the Red Sox game, get to take in BP from the Green Monster
Harvard area is nice
Go to top of Prudential Center, which is where the duck tours begin and end
Take the Samuel Adams brew tour and there is another one as well can't remember the name though
Head to Italy section, Mike's Pastry and can't go wrong at most of the eateries there
Freedom tour is okay but a ton of walking
Ye Olde Union Oyster House eat there

If you have time, head to Cape Cod, Newport is about an hour away, and you can get up to Maine for best lobster rolls which is not too far either

If you like college baseball, head to the cape and catch a game.

Thanks for info. I am thinking of doing a Thursday-Sunday trip in late July for my anniversary as well.

Is that a pretty good trip for a long weekend?

I'd like to do the Maine route also, but may be pushing it time wise..

Freedom trail, Red Sox tour of the stadium, walk around at Boston Marathon finish line- kind of eery. Also a nice Church in that Copley Square near the finish line

Fenway is an amazing experience. You don't even have to like baseball to enjoy it, but if you're a baseball fan it's almost like a religious experience. No kidding.

Duck Tour - I typically don't like real touristy things, but enjoyed this. Do it early in the trip. It gives you a good background and layout of the city.
Italian food in North End
Dinner and Drinks in South End too
Freedom Trail - Covers all the historic landmarks. On the 4th they read the Declaration of Independence from the Old State House
Harpoon Brewery (Awesome beer hall)
Get a Boston Cream Pie from the Omni Parker House (great place to stay too)
Walk around Boston Common

went last summer for 5 days. do a duck tour the first day you get there, gives you a great general idea of the city. the tours guides are very knowledgeable.

my one piece of advice:

DO THE FREEDOM TRAIL BACKWARDS!!! Start at the end (Bunker Hill memorial) and finish in the heart of the city. The trail ends in Charlestowne, and while gorgeous, there is no easy/close bus access near the memorial.

Legal Seafood is right by aquarium
Aquarium is ok but nothing special
Legal Seafood looks like a tourist trap but the food is really good and it is always crowded

Wife and I went to boston a year ago. Thought it kinda sucked. Historic, cool things to see, but we were bored the second day there.

We really enjoyed driving up the coast in new Hampshire and maine. There's a map you can get at a visitors center to follow the coast and visit all the little towns.
