Debit card skimmer on ATMs Fraud

Anybody have this happen to them? Any tips on preventing it? I heard if you pay for your gas inside-- it helps, as the skimmer machines that read your card are generally on the gas pumps.

Never use a debit card. Use a credit card. Better protection and if the number is stolen they're stealing from the credit card company not your bank account.

Pay attention to your credit card purchases and report anything you don't recognize.

My bank had two instances of skimmers installed. One of them got my dad @ Best Buy twice for 5k each time. They duplicated the card# and probably had an inside guy @ Best Buy who "overlooked" the ID requirement to buy a 5k TV.

My debit card number has been stolen twice. That is why I only keep a small balance in my checking and more in my savings to transfer as needed.

this. My debit card was skimmed like 3x in a 2 year period and I got tired of dealing with it.

Credit card only. Pay it off before interest accrues. Functionally the same and you're better protected against fraud.

Seriously? Does it improve your credit score? Debt ulization would be raised and that isn't good on the credit score.

After just talking with the detective they seem to overlook the inside guy. They somehow stole my money at a USPS.

I think it only hurts if you keep a significant balance relative to your overall credit limit.

Ie waiting until you have 3k used on a 5k credit limit.

Just pay it off every couple weeks or after a big purchase.

Underutilization can also be bad for your credit score

Use credit everywhere and pay off your entire balance at the end of the month. I've got a Citi card that gives me 2% back- 1% when I spend and 1% when I pay. No rotating categories.

I don't use my debit card anywhere but the ATM at my bank (Chase). If they allowed a scammer device to be installed on their ATM on their property, I'd raise holy hell.

Go to pump nearest the store. And wiggle the card slider before inserting your card.

I had just gotten the new debit card with the chip. We see how that helped.

Utilization is not bad. The biggest thing is balance vs limit.

This. I have a spending account and an account for bills and the bulk of our money. I can transfer money between the 2 but I usually only keep a couple hundred in the spending account.

In 2008 I was attempting to renew my gym membership at the counter of the local fitness center. My BOA Visa was declined so I called the bank and they said it was frozen due to suspicious activity.

Earlier that day a transaction for $300.00 was made at a Lowe's in BC Canada, then an hour later an additional charge for $5,000.00 was attempted but the bank wouldn't allow it, at a Home Depot in the same Canadian area. The BOA fraud representative I spoke with told me the transactions were attempted using a card that had been made with my information on the magnetic strip. Have no idea how the info was compromised, however BOA did not hold me responsible for the initial $300.00 and they sent me a new card within 2 days.

Well keep in mind that the threshold for anyone to GAF is 5k-10k. Anything under that, they'll smile at you, watch you walk away and then laugh their arse off at you. There are so many instances of fraud and theft that the cops literally DGAF about it b/c of the frequency.

In this case, my dad closed his account and wouldn't you know - they used the card AGAIN at the same Best Buy
