if you're using a card, might as well use a credit card with rewards and pay it off so you don't accrue interest.

credit cards have much more consumer friend chargeback rights. you should always use a CC for big ticket purchases so a) your cash isn't tied up and b) the rules are in your favor if services are not rendered.

I understand that concept and I also could see this being important to someone trying to build their credit. But I am beyond that and its just one thing I do not have to do at the end of the month. Saves more time for peeing....

I like using the debit card. Its basically the new way to write checks. I dont have to worry about paying it off at the end of the month and having that balance.

Now I do use a credit card for my business. Keeps things nice and neat for the accountant.

I understand that but I use debit for everyday type things.

Not true in Georgia. When you swipe your debit card at some pumps, it immediately asks you for your zip. No other questions are asked.

Been that way for about a year or so.
I didn't have this problem until i got my new card with the security chip on it, now it's declined as a debit at almost all pumps. Just use it as a credit now.

What's the issue with debit cards? Have they become trashy?

I will never buy anything with a card directly linked to my bank account. Much harder to get fraud fixed on your account vs credit card

Plus credit card rewards

Because the pumps need a special (expensive) encryption to run PIN debit. Some choose not to accept it at the pump because of the cost, or they are waiting to upgrade to a slot where the chip is used.
So, if the encryption device is an issue, they just run em as credit....and that requires a matching zip to approve.

No I don't have a Winn Dixie card

Seems like it would be much easier to get someones zip code if you had their card than their PIN number.

While true, others in this thread have explained why their is a higher threshold for a debit transaction than there is for a credit transaction.

To each their own, but I prefer a nice and neat bank statement with 6-8 transactions a month, one being the monthly Amex bill, instead of a clusterfrick of $2 charges here and there for ICEEs or a pack of gum. I run everything through my credit card. If you use a credit card for other purchases here and there, I don't see what the hassle is since you've got to pay that card each month anyway.

yea, I dont use my debit card for small stuff. I use cash for that. But its just faster to use my card at the pump if I am not planning on going it.

But I get what you are saying.

Not with most banks. Most will give you provisionary credit while they dispute the charge(s) for you. Unless it's a PIN based transaction. Then your chance of a dispute is slim.

I cut down on cash and debit card use and went strictly with one rewards card and it has been much easier. I keep a few bucks on hand, a debit card if I absolutely need cash, but everything that can conceivably get charged does get charged. Every bill that can be charged gets charged too. I'd be surprised if I have more than 15-20 transactions on my bank account per quarter. I love it.

ETA: The impetus for that move was the declining and eventually complete removal of reward points on my debit card.

Why are some fuel pumps asking you for your zip code instead of your PIN number when using a Debit card at the fuel pumps?

Because they're verifying billing information to process. Do you want them to have your PIN number? It's bad enough that you give it to them at Wal-Mart, but at least there's little chance someone has slipped their own reader in there, like they do at the pumps in some places.

Not really what I was aiming for. What I am saying is, as far as a stolen card goes, it would be easier for someone to get your zip code than your pin number so it would be safer for all involved if it used PIN.

Plenty of examples of reasons to use credit instead of debit on the web.
But, it's your money. Get your credit card hacked, they have access to the banks money... Get your debit card hacked, and they have access to your bank account.

Fortunately, one of my businesses is a high cash business. So I typically have cash and use it for day to day stuff to keep from depositing it.

I have a rewards card and use it for my business and its great. I guess I should consider using one more for my daily stuff but that is what the cash is for.

I agree from a straight security standpoint. What the pumps are dealing with is the scheme where the thieves put their own reader in there. In that case, you're better off with them only having your zip. I get what you're saying from a security protocol standpoint. What you're dealing with at the pumps is this other issue.

I'm all about using someone else's money interest free if they'll let me, and if they want to give me additional perks for doing so, I'm going to go that route every time.

It is incredibly convenient IMO, but holding a bit of cash is still prudent.
