Why are some fuel pumps asking you for your zip code instead of your PIN number when using a Debit card at the fuel pumps?

Seems like it would be much easier to get someones zip code if you had their card than their PIN number.

Word to the wise: always pay inside.

There are schemes/ways criminals can steal your info at those outside pumps. Had my identity stolen twice last year, and my bank traced it to that.

If you choose credit, you enter your zip. If you choose debit, you enter your pin.

This. I've been the victim of a card reader twice while traveling. Now, I always go inside.

Not true in Georgia. When you swipe your debit card at some pumps, it immediately asks you for your zip. No other questions are asked.

Been that way for about a year or so.

Think I may have been gotten by one, there were several charges pending on my card, but it seems like my bank caught it in time.

How did you determine this is where your info was stolen?

I had a credit card through my company that I only used for gas while traveling.

I always push the card reader to the left and right with my hand. If it breaks off or is loose, it's one that someone put on to steal your info. However, some replace the entire panel with their device.

Never swipe a debit card anywhere. If your credit sucks, go to your bank and preload a debit. If someone jacks your debit card information you are not entitled to any of the funds being replaced. The federal government mandates that credit card companies return any lost funds... at least for now.

This is false. It can be a bigger hassle than with a credit card, but there's still some protection.

That's bullshite.

I had mine ripped off for a couple grand and got it all back.

Happened over the summer.

Op,

Choose credit and enter your zip. Harder to get ripped off when you do that. Never enter a pin at the pump.

The tiger market on 18th in Monroe had a problem with several people's info getting stolen.

Card companies can see common place when there are several "hacksl"

All depends on your bank. Go talk to them. I didnt make that up fwiw. Chase banker told me that. Normally bigger banks will return the money because they want your business.

What's the issue with debit cards? Have they become trashy?

if you're using a card, might as well use a credit card with rewards and pay it off so you don't accrue interest.

credit cards have much more consumer friend chargeback rights. you should always use a CC for big ticket purchases so a) your cash isn't tied up and b) the rules are in your favor if services are not rendered.

I am not a regular here so you will have to excuse my ignorance.

If I need to get a driver, I will.
