Maybe he should have taken traveler’s checks.
But it’s too late for that now. All the money – $16,000 in cash – that Joseph Rivers said he had saved and relatives had given him to launch his dream in Hollywood is gone, seized during his trip out West not by thieves but by Drug Enforcement Administration agents during a stop at the Amtrak train station in Albuquerque.
An incident some might argue is still theft, just with the government’s blessing.
Rivers, 22, wasn’t detained and has not been charged with any crime since his money was taken last month.
That doesn’t matter. Under a federal law enforcement tool called civil asset forfeiture, he need never be arrested or convicted of a crime for the government to take away his cash, cars or property – and keep it.

Waite said that in general DEA agents look for “indicators” such as whether the person bought an expensive one-way ticket with cash, if the person is traveling from or to a city known as a hot spot for drug activity, if the person’s story has inconsistencies or if the large sums of money found could have been transported by more conventional means.
“We don’t have to prove that the person is guilty,” Waite said. “It’s that the money is presumed to be guilty.”
DEA agents may choose to ask the person whether his or her possessions can be searched in what is called a “consensual encounter.” If the subject refuses, the bags – but not the person – can be held until a search warrant is obtained, he said.
More land of the free stuff.

Tip 1 when carrying large amounts of cash. Keep it on your person and not in your bag.

There are hundreds of stories of cops, not DEA, doing this on I40.
Its become a serious issue and is starting to get some exposure. They did a 60 Minutes on it. So fricked up.
They can't prove you are doing anything wrong, but think you are, so they take all your cash.

John Oliver should really do a segment about Civil Forfeiture.

So glad the DEA wasn't around when I was in college between the Bursar office and my dorm. I'd have a stack at the beginning of each semester

Reasons like this are why I'm glad I keep no more than $20-40 of cash on me at any one time. Mainly because if I lose my wallet I can cancel the the cards, but the cash is gone.
Now I'll be sure to put all my drug money in the bank so they can't take it all.

I don't even believe that they think most of these people are guilty. Just state sponsored robbery.

I'm that idiot that gets shot on the side of the road. No way in hell they are taking my money without a fight.

I'm sure the DEA cataloged every single bill of that seizure. Protect and serve

The money is presumed to be guilty. Chew on that phrase for a few minutes

civil asset forfeiture
One of the most fricked up civil liberties issues of our time
And no one (minus Rand Paul) is talking about it

I know you were being funny but they can take it from the bank too.....and they don't need to leave their office to do it.

Let's be honest, once his dreams of Hollywood fizzled out, the money would have been used to buy copious amounts of drugs anyway.

I think it was 60 Minutes or Dateline or one of those shows, but this was what happened:
One guy travels to different areas around the country doing cleanup work for cash after disasters like Tornados. Had like $12k earned the hard way doing work others don't want to do.
Cops took it all and he was just sitting there pale in the face dumbfounded holding back tears. Cops left and he tried to fight in court for it. He was given a court date like 8 months later and ended up losing it because the cops said his story didn't add up.
ETA:
Oh and he was pulled over for suspicion of drug activity because he was in a rental car from several states away and he was on a "known drug trafficking highway". I40 is one of the most used interstates in the country.
