David Byrne Admits He 'Regrets' How He Handled Talking Heads Breakup, Says He Was a Tyrant

David Byrne knows that the Talking Heads’ breakup could have gone smoother.

The musician, who is currently marking the premiere of his musical Here Lies Love on Broadway, opens up to PEOPLE in this week’s issue about the band’s acrimonious end — and how more than 30 years on, he regrets the ways in which he handled things.

“As a younger person, I was not as pleasant to be around. When I was working on some Talking Heads shows, I was more of a little tyrant,” he says. “And then I learned to relax, and I also learned that collaborating with people, both sides get more if there’s a good relationship instead of me telling everybody what to do.”

He continues: “I think [the end] wasn’t handled well. It was kind of ugly.”

The group released eight albums together, rising to fame on the back of hits like “Burning Down the House” and on Byrne’s electrifyingly eccentric stage presence. By 1988, though, Talking Heads was done putting out new music, and Frantz told the Los Angeles Times in 1992 that Byrne had “just decided to leave” without discussion, leaving the other groups members shocked and upset.

“I have regrets on how that was handled. I don’t think I did it in the best way, but I think it was kind of inevitable that would happen anyway,” he says. “We have a cordial relationship now. We’re sort of in touch, but we don’t hang out together.”

This is bassist Tina Weymouth's father. Went on to be a Vice Admiral and lived to 102.

Division: U.S.S. Lexington (CV-16)
GENERAL ORDERS:

Commander Fast Carrier Task Force Pacific: Serial 0362 (July 8, 1944)
CITATION:

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant Commander Ralph Weymouth (NSN: 0-81252), United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a carrier-based Navy Dive Bomber and Commanding Officer of Bombing Squadron SIXTEEN (VB-16), attached to the U.S.S. LEXINGTON (CV-16), in action against the enemy fleet in the vicinity of the East Philippine Sea on 20 June 1944. Lieutenant Commander Weymouth led a large strike group of planes from Air Group SIXTEEN in an attack on Japanese carrier forces which were beyond the safe range limits of his planes. His flight of dive bombers scored seven direct hits on a large carrier not previously damaged and two direct hits on another. The torpedo bombers scored nine direct bomb hits on the carrier not previously damaged. He personally made a direct hit on the undamaged carrier. His attack resulted in the sinking of one carrier and the burning and probable sinking of another. The flight was under continuous aerial attack (even in the dives) for 25 minutes resulting in three planes being shot down by enemy aircraft while his flight shot down four enemy planes. The return flight was made at night with the additional hazard of a night carrier landing, low fuel and several damaged planes. His courage and disregard for his own safety were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Good for Byrne. Talking Heads is one of my top ten favorite bands.

That entire show is amazing. It used to be on youtube, but I guess they have pulled it since they are re-mastering it and releasing it to theatres.

It sounds like he's getting the "I'm running out of money" blues, so it's time to dust off the relationship with the old Heads.

Byrne is a ludicrously talented prick. Love their music, but I've always read and heard how awful he was to not just his bandmates, but crews for shows and things like that.

I wonder how much money Tina made with the tom tom club song that Maraiah Carey and many other R&B artists have looped over the years. I wonder if it's more than David Byrne made in Talking Heads.

ETA- I read somewhere that Trent Reznor made more money off the Lil Nas X Old Town Road loop than he made on Pretty Hate Machine.

Back in the last days of Carson's Tonight Show Leno was guest hosting, & John Cale was a guest.

Leno tiptoed around the question of a Velvet Underground reunion:

"I know there's been some bad blood between you & Lou Reed, but... Would it be possible... Maybe someday... Could there ever be a Velvet Underground reunion?"

CALE: "Sure, if they pay us."

If I could verify Byrne could still carry a tune like the Talking Head days before seeing them, I'd pay a pretty penny for that ticket.

But I've seen some crappy old musicians trying to be great again.

Saw his most recent tour; it was kind of bizarre, honestly, more like performance art than a concert, but he was great, very entertaining.
