For those who have purchased a vehicle in the past few months, has anyone experienced dealerships adding in stupid so-called "mandatory fees" as a way jack up profits? I went to a dealership recently and when they presented me with the line item cost sheet, I noticed some type of add on fee to cover shite like lost keys, dents, cracked rims, cracked windshield, etc. The cost was $1,995. I asked the guy to remove that cost b/c I don't want any of that and he said that's a mandatory cost that the dealership places on every sale and it can't be removed. They wouldn't remove it so I left without purchasing the car.

I spoke with a friend that's in the industry and he's saying it's commonplace now that dealers are adding in these random arbitrary fees on sale transactions.

I knew it was a bad time to buy, but I didn't realize it was this damn bad. I'm just curious to see who else has had this experience.

I got what I thought was a pretty good deal on a truck a couple of weeks ago. Higher than it would have been in 2019, but everything is.

We bought a Hyundai in March … they added $1000 to sticker but I got zero percent financing. Didn’t buy any extras and got them to take the vin etching off.

And we got what I considered a great price for our trade.

Not sure what your looking for but I really like my Santa Fe.

Get a detail on the actual coverage...if it's legit, buy and drive it like you stole it...make them bitches regret that decision

I don't see the market changing over the next year. I'm not in a rush, but I will need to buy something in the next few months

Not this specific experience, but when I bought my new truck during the pandemic, they tried to charge me $3,000 more than what we agreed on by adding on made up charges to the final paperwork.

I walked away and sent them pictures of a different truck I bought from someone else.

Good for you for standing up for yourself and walking away.

My mother in law had an $800 inspection and diagnosis fee. I asked "did they put a full 8 hours into it? "
Such a rip. She wouldn't walk over it.

There are states where this (representing a dealer add on as required by the manufacturer) is actually illegal. Provided the enforcement agency responsible takes an interest.

Big picture this is a suboptimal time to buy a car. Even with low inventories the huge margins are providing record profits for many dealers.

Remember everyone of these scummy dealerships when the balance begins to sway in the opposite direction.

Biden is still in office for the better part of 3 more years. I doubt anyone looking for a car right now could wait that long.

Sounds like they were trying to stick with UVP (Ultimate Vehicle Protection). This is certainly not a mandatory cost and is a typical add at any dealer. Good for you for walking out. It definitely is not mandatory anywhere.

The problem is people are still buying them even with the markups. Dealers are adding all of these costs because they can. Once people stop living with the newest and best mindset is when we will see prices start to stabilize. That won’t happen though, because everyone needs their insta-cred

This is my first time hearing of something like this, but I'm certain in Louisiana this shite is probably legal. Let me know if it is indeed illegal, b/c I will report their arse if it is.

$2k for windshield replacement my wife would come out ahead on that deal for sure.

I’d check out the cancellation policy on the protection plan, most likely you can buy the car then just cancel it and let the dealer get charged back. If the coverage is decent though it’s certainly better than just paying $2k over in markup.

Many dealerships simply don't have inventory. For instance, a dealership that sold 80 to 100 vehicles a month might only be able to sell 15 to 20 vehicles a month now due to production shortages from the politically motivated "common cold" pandemic.

Limited inventory + high demand = higher prices and less incentive to negotiate. Many can't sell on volume now. So, they have to make it up somewhere to keep the lights on, employees paid, etc. On the flip side, used car values are up considerably. What does that mean? Your trade is likely worth more today than it was 2 years ago.

Service at a dealership is where the real money is being made today.
