Station wagons and minivans...it's the aftermath of your wife draining all the dignity and self respect from your body.

Right?

What else would they be? They're not a substitute for a truck or a "real" SUV - they're a substitue for a sedan.

You see, CAFE standards changed and that (ultimately) over time virtually killed the RWD sedan - a few survive, but they used to be the benchmark. Trucks (and a loophole for SUVs) were exempt, and, even outside the south, light trucks and SUVs replaced the family sedan, particularly the even heavier "station wagons" about 20 - 25 years ago. Well, they're gas guzzlers. So, to introduce car technology back into that market, they started making modular, car-based SUVs - combining the better aspects of both designs. (ETA: And, yes, the makers recognized that SUVs look "cooler" than either station wagons or minivans. Makes it an easier sell to dad, who is desperately trying to hang onto his balls.)

Viola, the station wagon was reborn! The market tries to adjust, despite all governmental interference to the contrary.

Other than the Subaru Outback what are some other wagon options? I'm looking for a nice hauler that doesn't come across as just a woman's vehicle.

Accord Crosstour

Toyota Venza

The new Golf SportWagon

What's emasculating about an awd station wagon? Hell even the Volvo wagons are bad arse practical vehicles.

Audi RS6 Avant. Not your dad's station wagon. 0-60 in 3.9 seconds.

I for one miss the full size station wagon. The 90's caprice wagon sat seven people in comfort and could make it from Austin to NOLA on a single tank of Gas doing 80mph the whole time.

Europeans like station wagons because they get the good ones over there. We get crap compared to the Euro models.

Because it's a fricking station wagon. It advertises you have lost the fight and allowed your wife to be head of the household and decision maker no matter how demeaning.

It's akin to her making you hold her big hot pink purse why she shops at the mall. Nothing worse than the sea of pathetic husbands who must sit in the rest area of the mall holding her purse.

Just the All Road wagon. It's a shame but Americans don't generally go for wagons so I can't blame Audi. Financial decision.
