So about a year ago, everyone had to change credit cards and debit cards to get the new cards with the "Chip Technology" on them. A lot of talk and BS

A year later and I rarely purchase something at a place that actually uses or has the Chip reader? WTF? I thought this was suppose to be some kind of major security break through

I would say 10% of the places I use my card in person, uses a chip reader. I just swipe and move on

Give it time. The majority of places up here have them now.

The security actually is much better.

The problem is updating the hardware and the software for the new systems. Tons of retailers don't want to invest because the credit card companies themselves absorb most of the fraud.

Consumers got caught up in a battle between card issuers and vendors. It pretty much is useless at the consumer level. How many fraudulent charges are made in card present transactions with fake cards? Answer, not many.

Nearly every place I go uses them, and I live in BFE.

Get a chip in your right hand or forehead. So you can buy and trade.

Security is better but it's just a matter of time before chip cards are just as vulnerable as swipe cards.

That being said, I really don't get the fuss. I can tell which POS is which and the card stays in for a little while. Meh.

Security isn't meaningfully better. Most fraud is on card not present transactions. Chips do nothing for that.

I agree with this... I dont need the card to make charges online or over the phone.

Most of the places here that have a reader that will accept the card, has it tapped over and uses the swiper...

Post office, Publix, Quick Trip, Restaurants I use. I use my card at these places a few times per week and none use the chip

Just a process to move you towards eliminating the card all together, and placing a chip in the back of your hand.

It's called EMV (Europay/MasterCard/Visa, I think) and much of the civilized world has been doing it for years. It's the reason why the US has a disproportionate ratio of fraud to transaction.

In years past, fraudulent transactions would be covered mostly by the card issuer. With EMV, there is a liability shift from the issuer to the vendor. If vendors do not make the switch to EMV-based transactions, any fraud costs are to be footed by the retailer or vendor.

A large percentage of the liability has shifted to the retailer for not using chip readers.

Wal Mart and most drug stores seem to be the only places that use them from my experience.
