Vera Bumpers, the first female chief and first African-American chief of Houston's Metro Police Department, remembers one of the first calls she went on shortly after joining the force right out of college.

An irate passenger on a bus was threatening people. Bumpers, who has been in law enforcement for close to 40 years, was the first one to respond. When she arrived on the scene, she approached the door and saw people exiting the bus.

"From where I could see, he looked like he was about 7 feet tall. Of course, I'm 5-foot-2," she said. The bus driver took notice of that size disparity and told Bumpers, "You are going to get your arse whooped."
Bumpers proceeded to enter the bus while the man continued cursing her and acting like he was on something, she said. "I just started to talk to him and I said, 'You appear to be upset about something. I think we can work through this.' As I talked, he started to calm down and in my mind, I'm thinking, 'Where is backup? Where is backup?' "

The man, who didn't have a weapon in his hands, eventually walked off the bus with her. By the time her backup finally arrived, she had him in handcuffs.

"And the guys are like, 'Wow, how did you (do it?)' " she said. "I think that is one of the times where I saw the importance of how you respond verbally to a situation without using any of the tools on your belt, especially when the person doesn't have any weapon in their hand. ... When it's those situations that you have to use your verbal skills to de-escalate a situation. ... I think women are excellent at that."

At a time of tension between law enforcement and civilians across the country, especially after a wave of police-involved shootings of African-American men, could more women in blue help keep the peace? Could more women on the force lead to safer communities?

It'll lead to physically weaker police forces. We can speculate on the rest.

Just look at Europe and how the women beat officers get run over. It means they have to have more officers per shift. And they don't have near the crazy mothafukas we have over here.

The message here is that police need to talk to people and try to de escalate the situation instead of going straight to violence like they do now. It has nothing to do with women.

Hell no, many of these women end up needing help from the public, or their arse would end up dead to a thug.

they cannot handle a man 1 v 1, and they end up having to need help on many situations. there are times where grown arse men, who are built and tough as an ox, need help.

We've had 4 female cops saved by some random Joe, who had to knock the thug off of her, as the thug was beating her arse. One was getting pistol whipped by her own gun.

Just because it worked with that guy doesn't mean it will work with everyone.

Acting like you can reason with a guy who is mentally unstable and on PCP is retarded.

Having said that, police probably do need to learn more about de-escalation, but the problem is you can't judge what is going on in a suspect's head and if you try to play games it puts you at greater risk.

If it's not kosher to say that men are stronger than women, it shouldn't be kosher to say that women are better at de-escalating a situation.

thugs/criminals have a completely different mind set these days, they care nothing about human life.

And these ladies will get exposed in wrong situations. Imagine 2 females handling some of these protest shite, where they are out numbered 10/1. The Men can barely handle it, and women are mentally more fragile.

For every hard arse female cop u show me, i'll show you 20-40 who would struggle with a teenager, let alone a grown arse man who has no cares about killing her with his own hands.
