If this isn't protecting and serving, I don't know what is. Give the man a medal.

We've written a lot here at Ars about how video surveillance has captured cops doing bad things. We cover this area because the technology of body cams, Taser cams, dash cams, and even images taken by bystanders has changed our perspective on police behavior that would likely have been swept under the rug previously.
But this surveillance technology also captures officers who, in the words of a local Cleveland county prosecutor, have acted with "remarkable restraint." In this instance, body cam footage of several Cleveland patrol officers shows them doing everything they could to convince a man to put down his weapon.
Police came to visit Theodore Johnson's Cleveland residence after his wife claimed he threatened to kill her. The man had already shot one officer, striking the chest of a patrolman David Muniz's ballistic vest. "I know you shot me, but I'm not going to shoot you," Muniz tells the 64-year-old Johnson, according to police body cam footage taken at the scene.
Johnson replies, "Do what you do, man," according to the video.
According to the tape, Muniz tells Johnson, "Put the gun down. We don't want to kill you. Just drop the gun." "I wanna die," Johnson replies, according to the tape.
"No, you don't want to die," Muniz replies, according to the tape.
Officers are overheard telling Johnson they will get him some help. He says he doesn't want it, according to the tape. He raises his weapon, and the police open fire, killing Johnson on March 11.
If this isn't protecting and serving, I don't know what is. Give the man a medal.

He wants to die so badly so he shot a cop then begs him to shoot him? Why didnt he just shoot himself? Dont drag others into your bullshite, selfish as hell making that cop go through that...

That's two stories like this in two weeks. S. Carolina had a similar incident where the cop was killed and his/her colleagues didn't kill the perp.
Amazing restraint and a great example of the good side of the blue line. She should get as much coverage as the bad ones, but they won't.

Buddy who lives in Cleveland says the reverends are calling for protests

I call the cops out for the bad shite the bad ones do, but I agree situations like this are under-reported. Based on what I read here I'd say 5-0 did all they could in this instance.
I'd have greased that dude as soon as he shot at me.

People like that shouldnt be allowed to call themselves reverands. Seriously. That's doing nothing but inciting violance and wanting your 15 min of fame. If they were true reverands they would've been offering to help them man, not point fingers at the few good cops doing their job.

I'm pretty sure he was joking. Nobody has a friend in Cleveland.
But this is a pretty impressive story for the cop. More cops like this are needed.

Props to the cop I guess, but if you shoot me in the chest, I'm going to kill you.

the definition of gun control?

I might be missing something (I didn't see the article) here but these sound like situations where restraint is absolutely not needed. A man whose armed and proved that he's willing to shoot is a threat to everyone around him and he needs to be removed as a threat as quickly as possible.

well to be fair...his fly was open.

sadly, the media won't push this story on the people. They've learned that outrage and scandal makes money. Objectively Americans lives are too good for them to feel too strongly about inspiring stories like this.

Not to mention if he kills you by shooting you in the head he now has another gun, more ammo, and your radio. Is restraint needed to do the job? Yes. Is the sense to know when and how to engage needed too? Yes.
