Had a guy hit me up last night at the race track in Denham (190) said he just got back from serving overseas and his daughter was hurt in an accident . Then he asked if I knew any churches in the area that I thought could help, I told him I didn't leave in Denham...." We'll do you think you could give me $20 for some gas". Me: sorry I don't carry cash......I must be an easy mark, I'm constantly getting hit up by these crack heads

What's wrong with these people? How do you have such little shame.

I've put gas directly into a poor looking guy's old truck one time before when he asked for gas.

One that really got me was about three or four months ago this old haggard black guy came in the side door at St. Jude during mass and started going through the pews asking for money. It was really bad. I mean do you know how hard it is to turn down a beggar literally during church?

No matter how many times people get scammed, there's always got to be a sucker who feels bad. Glad you didn't give him money. Pisses me off when people won't stop feeding the strays.

Isn't the collection plate technically a beggar at church? If so, then pretty easy to turn down

True story:

I was at a BP and only had my BP card on me with no cash. Tried swiping my card a few times but it wouldn't read. Saw a dad and son chatting at the pump across from mine so I walked up, explained my situation and asked politely if I could get $5 to get home since I wasn't too far out, but low enough on gas that I wasn't gonna make it. Within 2 seconds the dad says, "Sure, no problem." Hands me a $20 and that was it. On the one hand I was thankful for his kindness, but on the other hand I thought what idiot gives a stranger $20 for gas after being asked only for $5?

I've offered before, because i never give them cash, but their tanks must be full. They usually get mad and walk away. I did buy a meal for a black guy riding a highly modified bicycle, at the College drive Exxon a Quarter pounder meal. He didn't ask for money. He asked for food.

"Gas money" is the universal routine for a bull shite con game. Nobody approaching strangers in public for gas money ever actually needs gas. Never.

Agreed. A few years ago I got the young lady in military camo asking for gas money to get back to her unit as her wallet was lost. I told her that I wouldn't give her money but to meet me at the gas station just down the block and I would fill her tank. She agreed but never showed.

I've helped people out on a few occasions. Typically never cash. I've bought people food and gas before. I try to scrutinize their sincerity and the veracity of their stories. But since living in Baton Rouge, I've been approached more times than I can count by absolute bullshite artists and shysters that are either pushy or total assholes when I decline. I even had one guy tell me I could go inside and get money out the ATM with my card since I didn't have any cash while I was at the gas pump. Yeah, nah bruh.

Point being, now I generally decline everyone. Baton Rouge has destroyed my humanity.

"Nip it in the bud" technique is my go-to. If I'm alone, my tone is calm but firm. If I'm with my kids, my tone is a bit more aggressive. It's very effective for bums, solicitors and scam artists who approach you in public places.

This is where you messed up. Don't let them give you their long sad story. Just say no thank you immediately or interrupt them and say "you are not asking me for money are you b/c I don't have any."

Keep it short with these panhandlers and be nice.

There was a guy long ago who worked the post office parking lot in downtown BR, among other places.

He had a wicked looking medical device on his neck that looked like rods going inside him, but on close examination it was just pressed against the skin. Needed $2 to get to a doctor appointment.

I applaud his props and creativity, but he never got a dime from me.

Another prop bum worked an outlet mall in Texas. He had a small gas can that he carried as he worked the lot. The employees in the stores said it was his regular gig.

I work in downtown BR and go to that gas station across from FrostTop frequently. I have become a master at dealing with beggars.
