I know a combat veteran who gets terrified of July 4th and New Years because of fireworks. He has PTSD and the fireworks bring flashbacks to him and he just becomes a completely different person immediately upon hearing the fireworks.

I feel so bad for him that he has to go through what he's going through and he says the VA doesn't really do much in the way of helping.

He actually tried to take sleeping pills each July 4th and New Years so he can sleep right through the sounds. Sometimes they help, sometimes they don't. He served three tours in Afghanistan and Iraq and was hit by mortar fire. He survived, obviously, but two of his buddies didn't. He saw their dismembered bodies afterwards.

frick you for thinking this is a "look at me" attempt. Just frick you. I, for one, am glad he's doing this because it really does affect combat vets in ways most people can't imagine.

But they need to take the initiative to remove themselves from ordinary circumstances that make them uncomfortable without trying to convince others to change their customary behavior

So they should leave their home so you can satisfy your need to set off fireworks?

I have no problem with it.

I haven't ever seen anyone brag about having PTSD. I'd bet that the only reason this is even out there is because some local news group saw/heard of the sign and wanted to do a story about it.

Contrary to popular belief, and social media, the VA helps those with issues...

I have. It's usually a sign of those that don't have it.

It seemed less about PTSD for Sledge, although he did have adjustment issues when he got back. More like he just had seen enough death and harm to people that he didn't even want be around it anymore, including for animals.

Umm I think you just defined PTSD for some people.

I just said my buddy with PTSD hasn't received much help from them. My comment wasn't based on popular belief or social media. It was based on many conversations with a combat veteran with PTSD who has tried multiple times to get help from them and they give him the run around.

So the guy has the inconvenience the entire neighborhood? Bro, you can hear fireworks from miles away.
He needs to go somewhere if he feels it will bring up bad memories.

Right..So the VAs job is to figure out what the deal with your friend is...saying "I have PTSD, deal with me" isn't how to go about it

Got a vet buddy that doesn't do well around fireworks. Brings him to bad places.

I bet he doesn't say anything about it though. Usually the guys affected are the ones that don't complain about it.

Reminds me of when I went to see "Jarhead" in the theater in Monroe. Two guys showed up wearing their Marine BDU's and then hung around the outside the theater having a smoke and just waited for everyone that just saw the movie to start pouring all over them. Huge douchers.

What the frick?

A. This is against regulations
B. It's an a-hole move of epic proportions.

I'm a non-combat vet. This guy knows when holidays are where people shoot fireworks. Be prepared but don't expect people to change their habits for you.

I'm a combat vet with PTSD and I think this is fricking weak.

Sure, loud explosions that catch me off guard will get me all amped up, but if you're expecting it and know it's just your neighbors kids lighting off fireworks, it really shouldn't be that big of a deal.

To deal with the fireworks during the holidays, I've found it's best to join in the fun. I try to shake the street during our firework showdown with the neighbors. Plus, the kids love it. So I say get over yourself and show your kids a good time.

If this guy were really a vet, he'd know that it's the smell, not the sound, that really brings you back

He probably did have it, but it's hard to apply modern standards to someone who has had decades to relive, remember and put into perspective their time at war. My point was, and I don't want to broadly label people suffering from PTSD, is that it wasn't sensory response from what I can tell, but seemed more like a conscious choice to abandon that part of his life, almost out of disgust. At least that is what I got from the books.
